Stone Bridge Over the Lumbardh River in Prizren

Highlight • Bridge

One of the landmarks of the city is the old Ottoman stone bridge (Alb. Ura e gurit; Serbian Камеңи мост/Kameni most; Turkish Taş köprüsu). It connects the old parts of Prizren and spans the Bistrica (Alb. Lumëbardh). There are almost no historical sources about the construction period. Judging by the material, it was completed at the end of the 15th century. It has three arches, the middle one being the largest. In the 1950s the exterior of the bridge was altered as a result of road widening. It remained in this state until November 17, 1979, when massive amounts of water flooded the city and leveled the bridge to the ground. Since many residents had an emotional connection to the bridge and it was an integral part of the cityscape, work began on the precise restoration in the months that followed. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 5, 1982, and after five months of construction, the bridge was reopened on November 17, 1982 – exactly three years after it was destroyed. Since then it has shone in its old glory and is a magnet for many tourists.

Sinan Pasha Mosque

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sinan Pasha Mosque (Albanian Xhamia e Sinan Pashës; Serbo-Croatian Синан Пашина Џамија / Sinan Pašina Džamija; Turkish Sinan Paşa Camii) in Prizren is an important cultural monument from the Ottoman era of Kosovo. It is also the largest Islamic house of worship in the country and a landmark of the city of Prizren.
The mosque was built by vizier Cigalazade Yusuf Sinan Pasha at the beginning of the 17th century, not far from the river Prizrenska Bistrica (Alb. Lumëbardhi) in the center of the old town. Its construction period is usually dated between 1600 (or 1608) and 1615. Stones and plastic decorations from the destroyed Church of the Archangels were used for the walls. The mosque was fully restored between 2007 and 2011.
The mosque is built on a square plan, the side length is 17.80 m. The dome is supported by an octagonal tambour on trumpets. The rectangular space of the mihrab is covered by a semi-calotte. Most of the decorations on the ceiling of the prayer room date from the 19th century. The ornaments are floral and colorful. The four-column, three-domed porch was destroyed during World War I and rebuilt in 2011. The height of the minaret is given as 42 m (Trifunović). It has a sheref (balcony) and a typical Ottoman conical roof with roof decorations.

Bogorodica Ljeviška (Serbian Cyrillic Богородица Љевишка, Albanian Kisha e Shën Premtës, or Xhamia e Xhumasë) is the Serbian Orthodox central church of Prizren and the cathedral of the Eparchy of Raszien-Prizren.

Founded in the early 14th century by King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, it is the oldest five-domed church in Serbian art. During the Ottoman rule it was rededicated into a mosque. The badly damaged frescoes were discovered in the 1950s. Thanks to the quality of the execution by the Greek painters Michael Astrapes and Eustychios and the architectural importance of the cathedral, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo since 2006. At the same time, the City Cathedral of Prizren was put on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger because of the unclear legal situation in Kosovo and the difficult security situation.

Albanian extremists heavily damaged the church in 2004 during the pogroms in the Serbian province against the Serb residents and Serb cultural assets in Kosovo. Some of the frescoes were destroyed by heat and fire, the entire interior was demolished and parts of the construction were damaged by the fire.
