There is some confusion as to the legality of visiting the SMC Lakes. I have heard that it's privately owned and you need a permit to go there, I have heard that it's National Forest land and you don't. Well, turns out it is DNR land and therefore legal to visit and camp. There is an alternate approach from the north side that travels through private timber company land which you might need a permit to access. They also probably won't let you park overnight. If you are willing to hoof it over the ridge though, then it's free!
