Herrenmühle — Trave Rapids

Highlight • Waterfall

The Herrenmühle is located on the K 12 district road between Schwissel and Klein Gladebrügge. A long time ago - around 1850 - it was a "royal lease watermill" on the Trave. Linked to the mill lease were a pitcher, distillery, brewery and malting facility as well as the authority to trade in grain, malt and flour.

The mill building, romantically located in the Travetal, is privately owned and not accessible to visitors. But from the street you can go down to the Trave in just a few steps. Then you have a view of the river. It flows under the double arches of the road bridge and then foams with a gradient over larger stones. A small trave cataract.

The Wehrau is a small river in Schleswig-Holstein that flows into the Kiel Canal south of Rendsburg
here in Osterrönfeld. With a catchment area
of 151 km², it is the largest tributary of the Kiel Canal after the southern Eider.

Originally it was a left tributary of the Eider, but the construction of the canal, which runs above Rendsburg in the old Eider bed, cut it off from today's Lower Eider.

Now the Wehrau flows into the Kiel Canal from the south at canal kilometer 62.3 in Osterrönfeld.

In the Middle Ages the Wehrau was initially called Rönne. Its current name probably results from the fact that it was dammed in times of war to defend the city of Rendsburg. The Wehrau rises near Emkendorf near the road to Haßmoor and then flows
westwards towards the Emkendorf village of Bokelholm.
At the Neumünster-Flensburg railway line, it splits into two branches:
The right branch, called the Linnbek, receives most of the water and flows northeast
of the railway line to Osterrönfeld.
The left branch, called the Wehrau, gets its water mainly from the Mühlenau coming from the Brahmsee and passes under the railway line twice, first at Bokelholm and then again at Osterrönfeld, where it rejoins the Linnbek.

Holding Pattern (Packan)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Not in the mood to wait in front of a barrier again? Then you can simply put a queue here. First you go right on a single trail down to the pond, then continue on a narrow path along the bank of the pond. Finally, comfortably wind up the forest path (Packan!) Again, then the barriers will be wound up again. And on it goes!
(The other parts of the Ufertrail are also worthwhile. It is consistently narrow, every now and then peppered with roots and it goes a bit up and down too.)

April 16, 2026, Herrenmühle Trave Cataract

Municipality of Schwissel: „From April 2025 until autumn 2026, approximately, it will no longer be possible to cross the Trave via the Herrenmühle bridge due to demolition and new construction work. If there are no long-lasting flood events interrupting construction progress in the summer, the new bridge is expected to be completed in autumn 2026.“

Currently (May 2025), the Trave Bridge is closed to cars and trucks—for how long, it's not stated, or I couldn't find it. Cyclists and pedestrians can cross, at least on weekends. Whether it will be possible during work, I can't say...
