May 2, 2025, Gadenkirchenburg and St. Andreas Parish Church

The Gaden (forts) surrounding the church in Oberstreu are a gem that transports the viewer to another world. Even though the current ensemble is smaller than it was in its heyday, it still gives an idea of how the fortifications once protected the Oberstreu residents from enemies and how life in the village was then. According to an information panel at the Gaden (forts), after the village was relocated in the 11th and 12th centuries, a tower, a small church, and a cemetery emerged from the flood-prone Streu lowlands. Initially, these were only enclosed by a wall. However, the walls were soon raised, and storehouses, known as Gaden (forts), were added from the inside. The term comes from Old High German and means something like "parlor" or "chamber." The defensive power of the complex was increased by the church tower and a defensive tower in the northern row of Gaden (forts). Unfortunately, the complex was destroyed in 1553 during the so-called Margrave War. However, the stone portals on the doors, dating from 1557 to 1591, show that the Gaden were rebuilt after the war. At the latest, they had cellars underneath. (info MainPost)

A romantic moated castle in Unsleben. A beautiful photo opportunity from all sides. The remains of an old tower and a moated castle can still be seen. The castle is on the list of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

The Salzburg is privately owned and cannot be visited from the inside. However, you can access the inner courtyard and the small church. In the inner courtyard there is a restaurant (Italian) and parking spaces for their visitors. You can walk all the way around the castle from the outside. You will always have beautiful views of the castle, but less of the surrounding area.
