In the valley of the Kemmlitzbach stream ("Rummliche") between Börtewitz and Kemmlitz, there was a kaolin deposit 700 meters wide and 200-300 meters long. The kaolin thicknesses ranged from 5-25 meters. After the first discoveries of the "white earth" around 1884, the extraction of raw kaolin began here in 1920 using drift mining.

The sinking of deeper shafts was hardly possible due to strong water inflows. The central part served as the first open-cast kaolin mine from 1928. Mining in the underground mine ended in 1957. Subsequently, the "Karl Marx" open-cast mine was operated until 1972. To this day, the pit lake of the open-cast mine is used as an industrial settling basin. The turbidity of the water is caused by the introduction of the finest kaolin-clay minerals. Today, the "Silbersee" (Silver Lake) is used as a fishing spot.

For 160 years, the deposits in the Kemmlitz – Börtewitz – Querbitzsch area have been largely depleted. The current deposits are located north of Kemmlitz.

Bürgergarten Döbeln

Highlight • Natural

The once marshy area was mainly used by the municipal brewery before 1900. At the turn of the century, the city thought about how the area with the ponds could be better used - the idea for a community garden was born. You can read the detailed history of the creation of the park here: doebeln-entdecke.de/doebeln/buergergarten.html. Maybe during a break in the park restaurant? ;)

This park was created as a follow-up to the 4th Saxon State Garden Show in 2006 and today delights visitors of all ages with a wide range of attractions. These include a zoo with exotic animals, an adventure playground, a labyrinth, a skate park, a barbecue area, and a miniature golf course. At the idyllic Rose Lake, the "longest bench" invites visitors to linger. The multi-purpose hall "The O" houses a large collection of coffee pots. A notarized count in November 2009 certified 18,179 pieces, but also marked the end of the large-scale collection drive. https://www.leipzig.travel/poi/o-schatz-park
