In honor of Ernst Thälmann, the larger-than-life Ernst Thälmann Monument (Stralsund) was erected according to a design by Leipzig sculptor Walter Arnold with numerous donations from the Stralsund population and the city's businesses on the then Ernst Thälmann Quay. The Stralsund Zoo is home to around 1,000 animals of over 150 species, including about 70 domestic animal breeds. In enclosures designed to be close to nature, you can find lions, chimpanzees, wolves, bears, and bison. The domestic animal areas are like a farm. The manor house was built in its current form in 1881, but the core of the building is considerably older. The estate was owned by the von Bohlen family, in 1928 it was acquired by Friedrich Carl Freiherr von Langen-Keffenbrinck and later, until expropriation in 1945, by Max and Margarethe Berecke. Two graves in the northern part of the park from 1856 and 1886 remind of the von Bohlen family. "Here rests gently in faith in God and his redeemer Count Ludwig Carl Friedrich Wilhelm von Bohlen, lord of Preetz and Schmedshagen" can be read on one granite slab. The other commemorates his wife Caroline Friederike Hedwig Henriette Countess von Bohlen, née von Keffenbrink. The manor house includes a romantic, overgrown park with a pond, in the middle of which lies an island, as well as an early German motte from around 1300. In 2007, Preetz was included in the district's "Historic Manor Houses, Parks and Gardens" Leader project. In this process, the park was cleared. After 1945, the park was so subdivided that only 2.8 out of more than five hectares belong to the property, and some sightlines have been built over as a result. Furthermore, buildings such as the also listed stable were sold separately in the post-reunification turmoil. A concrete extension from GDR times, which cost the once magnificent terrace on the north side, appears particularly bizarre. The planned restaurant here was never opened. Among the highlights of the park are a magnificent tulip tree and three giant plane trees. Primarily used as a residential building during GDR times, the romantic manor house unfortunately had no luck after the political change with its new owners, who changed several times, so that the building still awaits comprehensive renovation in a deplorable state today. After 1945, the manor house was first inhabited by refugees and then by changing tenants. Due to a lack of renovation measures, the manor house, built in the 18th century and structurally altered around 1900, fell into disrepair. The manor house was acquired in 1998 by the Braun family and largely restored to its present condition. An extension built directly next to the gable of the manor house was removed, and until 1998 the manor house contained social housing. The park was also cleared during this time and the ponds were dredged. In 2010, the Ohle family acquired the main building, including the manor park and adjacent lands. Until the spring of 2018, renovation and conservation measures were again carried out on the building and in its immediate surroundings. From 2019, the construction of a therapeutic riding stable for children with physical disabilities and the restoration of the manor park are planned.
