Brotpfad Hut in the forest

Highlight • Mountain Hut

I have never seen such a beautiful and lovingly furnished shelter before. It is really cosy inside, there is even a guest book. Many thanks to the "shelter owners" Rita and Werner Schwarz from Nonnenbach, who have been looking after the upkeep of the shelter for more than 30 years. There is a small cross in the immediate vicinity of the shelter. In the winter of 1904, a little girl froze to death here after she got lost in the ice and snow in the forest and was not found in time. In memory of this tragic accident, a cross was erected here, which the forest workers have repeatedly renewed - up to the present day.

Beautiful refuge with a large meadow and barbecue. At the edge of the meadow is a memorial stone, which is reminiscent of the witch hunt in the Ahr valley ...

Fox hedge shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

A refuge in the forest that does exactly what it is supposed to do: provide protection! I cannot therefore agree with the previous speakers. The hut is in good shape and not a panorama hut. There is even a toilet on the premises!

Shelter at Russenkreuz

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Five paths intersect at the Russenkreuz, so the refuge and seating for hikers and bikers from all directions offer an ideal break. The place with the small hill, on which two chestnuts frame the small iron cross, remains somewhat nebulous. During excavations, there was no evidence of a burial mound suspected there, nor is it known what the name "Russenkreuz" refers to, it was simply simply called that way in the vernacular. Still nice here!

Former witch hunt/execution site and current barbecue area... sounds a bit macabre at first. Past and present seem to be in flux here. In 1609, 62 people were executed there on six days of executions for alleged witchcraft.1512, among others, Simon von der Leyen, the 22nd abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, was allegedly murdered by a witch using poisoned cheese. In Antweiler alone, nine alleged witches were executed. Given the small population, this is a fairly high number of victims. In the dioceses of Trier and Cologne, the witch craze raged particularly cruelly. During the Thirty Years' War, the Saffenburg was repeatedly the scene of witch trials - until the witch hunters were driven out by Swedish troops in 1632.
