Beautiful and wildly romantic, too bad there's no waterfall because of the drought...can someone turn on the tap? 😉

Beautiful hiking trail from the Devil's Gorge down to the suspension bridge. Very muddy and slippery in wet weather.

The path was restored and reopened in September 2023.

Completely dried up in the summer of 2023 and partly very destroyed by the flood 2 years ago. But you can still walk the path well. You should be sure-footed and not afraid of heights. Not recommended with small children and anxious dogs. (if someone comes towards you, you don't always have space to avoid) If you like rocks, you'll like it without water!

Update September 2023: Tanzlay hiking trail has been reopened. In addition, a bridge that was washed away in 2021 was rebuilt down by the river, so that you can do a nice circular hike of 8-10 km. Condition report from February no longer applies (except no water, still damp) Almost no water in February, but still a bit muddy. Descent from the waterfall is rather very difficult. Impressive and interesting in places. I would not recommend it as a hiking route.

Very nice, sometimes muddy path on a great stream with small waterfalls and cascades. It's worth incorporating into a small hike of your own or, for hikers who know your physical condition, into a tour around the Teufelsschlucht. I would recommend going uphill. One of the Devil's Paths also uses this section. I don't know which direction is recommended, because I put the tours together on komoot in advance.

Beyond the well-known spots, consider the Tanzlay Waterfall and Rock Formations, which offers a challenging trail through impressive rock formations. Another unique option is the Dreimühlen Waterfall (also known as Nohner Waterfall) further afield in the Eifel, which is notable for 'growing' due to limescale deposits, making it a fascinating geological phenomenon.
Yes, the area around Irrel Waterfalls is considered family-friendly, with options for kids and a great landscape to explore. The nearby Hängebrücke Irrel Parking Area is also noted as family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, providing easy access to the suspension bridge over the Prüm river.
The highest waterfall in the Eifel is the Klidingen Waterfall, which cascades down 28 meters. It's part of the 'HeimatSpur Wasserfall-Erlebnisroute,' a challenging hiking trail that offers a wild and untouched natural setting.
The region is rich in diverse natural features. Besides waterfalls, you'll find deep gorges like the Teufelsschlucht (Devil's Gorge) and the Butzerbachtal Suspension Bridges and Waterfalls, impressive rock formations, and dense forests. The Wolfsschlucht Gorge, for example, is known for its 'jungle atmosphere' with bubbling springs and unique rock formations.
The Irrel Waterfalls have a historical context, named in the 19th century for their countless cascades. While altered by a flood in 2021, the elemental force of nature that shaped this natural monument is still evident. The Dreimühlen Waterfall is also historically interesting as it was artificially created during the construction of a railway line.
Many waterfalls are integrated into hiking trails. For example, the Irrel Waterfalls area offers various paths, including routes leading to the Teufelsschlucht. The Klidingen Waterfall is part of the challenging 'HeimatSpur Wasserfall-Erlebnisroute.' For more general hiking, you can explore routes like the 'Rock Passage in the Eifel' or 'Genovevahöhle – Klausenhöhle' which are part of the Mountain Hikes around Gilzem guide.
While the guide doesn't specify an exact best time, spring and autumn are generally ideal for hiking in the Eifel region, offering pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. After heavy rainfall, waterfalls tend to be more impressive. Winter visits are possible, but access might be limited on some trails, and conditions can be muddy or icy.
The Southern Eifel Nature Park, where many of these waterfalls are located, generally welcomes dogs on its trails. However, specific conditions may apply to certain protected areas or challenging routes. Always keep dogs on a leash and be mindful of other hikers and wildlife.
There is a dedicated parking area, the Hängebrücke Irrel Parking Area, located directly opposite the suspension bridge over the Prüm river. This parking lot offers easy access to the Irrel Waterfalls and surrounding trails.
The Butzerbachtal Suspension Bridges and Waterfalls offer a wild and romantic experience on narrow paths with suspension bridges. It requires good footing and appropriate footwear due to potentially wet and challenging terrain. Note that the Butzerbachtal was closed for a period and reopened in September 2024, so always check for current access information before visiting.
Yes, the Eifel region offers various cycling opportunities. For instance, the former railway line near the Dreimühlen Waterfall has been converted into a cycling and hiking trail. You can find more cycling routes around Gilzem, such as the 'Prüm Bridge, Irrel – Nimstalbahn Viaduct Irrel' loop, in the Cycling around Gilzem guide.
The Dreamy stream with path offers a serene experience along a narrow forest path accompanied by a charming brook. It's known for being less crowded than the Devil's Gorge, providing a scenic and peaceful route between the Irrel Waterfalls and the visitor center.
