Mensinge Manor

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1381, Mensinge was first mentioned as a fief of the diocese of Utrecht. A hundred years later, the manor came into the possession of the Van Ewsum family, one of the most important families in the Ommelanden. The family had Borg Nienoord built in 1525.

Rear of Havezathe Havixhorst

Highlight • Historical Site

Havixhorst is first mentioned in 1371. Until the 17th century, Havixhorst was owned by members of the Van den Clooster family. From the 15th century, the lords of Havixhorst owned the collation right in the church of IJhorst. The Van den Clooster family also owned the manors of Rheebruggen and Vledderinge. In 1580, the manor Batinge was also conquered by them, but had to be relinquished. In the 17th century, the Havixhorst passed to the Van Munster family. Due to financial problems, Reinold van Munster had to give up the Havixhorst in 1658 and exchanged his property with the Ibinge heir in Echten owned by Johan de Vos van Steenwijk. The De Vos van Steenwijk family owned the manor house for almost three hundred years, from 1658 to 1956. In 1956, Havixhorst passed on to two grandnieces, the ladies Van Mourik, who sold the Havixhorst in 1963, after which major repairs took place over the years and, for example, the coach house was completely rebuilt. During that period it was used alternately as a retirement home, a holiday resort for young people, a reception center for Vietnamese refugees, and was eventually used as a hotel. In 1982, the Havixhorst was purchased by Het Drentse Landschap and its renovations and restoration continued.

Water Castle of Eelde

Highlight • Historical Site

South of the village of Eelde there is an archaeological monument: the 'Waterburcht van Eelde'. In the underground are the remains of a castle from the 13th century. But traces of it are also visible above ground. The motte-and-bailey castle of Eelde is a so-called motte-and-bailey castle. It probably consists of a wooden residential tower built on a raised mound (motte). The castle is surrounded by a system of several ramparts and moats, hence the name 'Waterburcht'. In the 17th and 18th centuries, a manor, called 'Therborch', stood on the site of the former moated castle. This is a stately home with farmlands around it. This manor house is first mentioned in 1646. It belongs to the Terborch family and probably derives its name from the location of the medieval moated castle. The manor house was demolished in 1799. oleel.nl/historie/bijzondere-locaties/de-waterburcht

Time for memories and history. The Havezate (a type of manor house belonging to a knightly order) is furnished in its original historical style and is maintained by volunteers. A great deal of heart and soul has been poured into this place. A wonderful and worthwhile visit!

is an authentically furnished manor house near Roden. In 1381 the house was mentioned by name as a fief of the diocese of Utrecht. Around 1330 there is already talk of tax payments for the ownership of a house in Roden, which probably refer to Mensing. On 24 January 1408 the Bishop of Utrecht granted the fief of Mensing in the Kerspel Roden to the widow of Johan Hiddingh. In 1433 the knight Herman Hiddingh received the Mensing estate.
