Beautiful hiking route. Unfortunately, we couldn't cross the water at this point either. Is it because of the water level? We then walked a long way over the rubble back to the Kudin Bridge. It's a shame that a circular tour wasn't possible. Still very worthwhile and the scenery is breathtaking.

Very beautiful nature. Set off early in the summer. Don't underestimate the heat. Take enough to drink and some provisions. Don't forget your swimwear.

Zadar County provides excellent access to two of Croatia's most renowned national parks known for their waterfalls: Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes National Park. Krka National Park, closer to Zadar, is famous for Skradinski Buk and Roški Slap. Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO site, boasts the impressive Veliki Slap.
Yes, the Zrmanja River, often called 'Beauty and the Beast,' flows through Zadar County and features several impressive waterfalls. Notable examples include Visoki Buk (also known as Veliki Buk) and Jankovića buk. The Krupa River also offers beautiful cascades, such as the Krupa River Cascades, which include sections with via ferrata.
The Zrmanja River is ideal for outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, rafting, and stand-up paddling, especially in the section between Kaštel Žegarski and Berberov buk. Swimming in the clean pools during summer is also popular, and you can hike along the river to discover remote cascades.
The best time to visit is generally during spring (April-May) when water levels are high from snowmelt, making the waterfalls particularly powerful and lush. Autumn (September-October) also offers beautiful scenery with changing foliage and fewer crowds. Summer is popular for swimming, but some smaller waterfalls, like those in Paklenica National Park, may have reduced flow or dry up.
Yes, the Waterfall in Velebit Nature Park is noted as a family-friendly location where you can even swim behind the cascade. Jankovića buk on the Zrmanja River is also a popular spot for picnics and swimming, suitable for families.
For a more secluded experience, explore the waterfalls along the Zrmanja River, such as Visoki Buk. These areas are generally less developed than the national parks. Visiting national parks like Paklenica during the low season (e.g., April) is also recommended for a less crowded experience, as noted by visitors to Paklenica National Park — Gorges and Waterfalls.
Absolutely. The region offers numerous hiking opportunities. For instance, you can hike along the Krupa River, with paths leading to a monastery near the Krupa River Cascades. Paklenica National Park also features extensive trails through gorges and past natural springs. For more hiking options, explore the Hiking in Zadar County guide.
Beyond the waterfalls, the region is rich in natural beauty. In Paklenica National Park, you'll find impressive gorges and natural springs where you can refill water bottles. The Zrmanja River flows through a 200-meter-deep canyon, offering stunning views. Krka National Park features unique travertine barriers and formations, while Plitvice Lakes National Park is famous for its terraced lakes interconnected by cascades.
Yes, some waterfall locations have historical significance. Near Jankovića buk on the Zrmanja River, you can find remnants of old mills. Krka National Park also features renovated rustic stone houses and watermills near its falls, and Roški Slap includes historical sites like restored watermills and the Oziđana pećina cave, a prehistoric archaeological site. The Ruins of the old mill and waterfall in Velebit Nature Park is another example.
Visitors frequently praise the untouched nature and the opportunity to refresh themselves in the water. Many appreciate the idyllic paths, even those that are a bit adventurous, and the chance to swim in natural pools. The stunning landscapes and the feeling of being in paradise, especially at spots like the Waterfall in Velebit Nature Park, are often highlighted.
While direct cycling paths might not lead right up to every waterfall, the broader Zadar County region offers excellent cycling routes. You can find various options for road cycling, including routes with views of the sea and bridges. For detailed routes, refer to the Road Cycling Routes in Zadar County guide.
Sturdy shoes are highly recommended, especially when exploring areas like the Krupa River valley where paths can be uneven or involve crossing stone slopes. Depending on the season, light, breathable clothing is suitable for warmer months, while layers are advisable for spring and autumn. If you plan to swim, bring appropriate swimwear and a towel.
