A staircase (€2 per person, payable at the kiosk on the street) leads down to the Gole Dell' Alcantara. The stairs are mostly shaded and not particularly steep.

Beautiful, but depending on the time of day, it can get very crowded. It's best to come in the morning. The cool water of the Alcantara is a relief on hot days 😃

Closed. No weather indication. Probably because of not enough people (November). To go down, you would have to pay A LOT of money to a private company. Horrible!

October 5, 2024, Alcantara Gorge

"Hike" is definitely an exaggeration. It is a walking path and at the same time worth seeing. Look for the Communal Entrance if you do not want to take guided tours etc. When buying the entrance ticket, make sure that you buy at least the orange route (6€). The €2 entrance ticket only allows you to access the beach via the stairs. If you are too lazy to walk or have difficulty walking, you can buy a ticket for the elevator to the river. But then you have to take the elevator and are not allowed to use the stairs, even though the price for the elevator is many times higher.

The most popular canyons in Messina include Gurne dell'Alcantara, known for its natural pools and river access, and Alcantara Gorge, famous for its unique hexagonal basalt columns. Another highly regarded spot is Cave di Caolino, a former mining area showcasing impressive rock formations with vibrant color variations.

What unique natural features can I expect to see in Messina's canyons?

Messina's canyons are characterized by their volcanic origins. At the Alcantara Gorge, you'll find stunning hexagonal basalt columns formed by ancient lava flows rapidly cooling in the river. Cave di Caolino, a former china clay mining site, displays remarkable rock colors and geological formations. The Stretta di Longi, carved by the Fitalia river, features vertical walls, waterfalls, and pristine natural pools.

What activities can I do in the canyons of Messina?

The canyons offer a range of outdoor activities. At the Alcantara Gorges, popular options include river trekking, body rafting, and canyoning, allowing you to explore the riverbed and swim in its cold waters. The Gurne dell'Alcantara provides various bathing opportunities. River trekking is also a highlight at Stretta di Longi, where you can wade through natural pools amidst lush vegetation.

Are there family-friendly canyons in Messina?

Yes, Gurne dell'Alcantara is considered family-friendly, offering easy hiking trails and multiple access points to the river for bathing. The Alcantara Gorges also have accessible sections and viewing platforms, though some river activities might be more suitable for older children or adults.

What is the best time to visit the canyons in Messina?

For the Alcantara Gorges, the shoulder seasons (April-June or September-October) are recommended for milder temperatures and fewer crowds. During summer, the cool water is a relief, but it can get very busy. The Stretta di Longi is best visited in the summer months due to higher water flow at other times of the year, which can make river trekking challenging.

Are there hiking trails near the canyons in Messina?

Yes, there are several hiking opportunities near Messina's canyons. For example, you can find various routes in the Parco dei Nebrodi, which is home to the Stretta di Longi and the Valley of the Mistretta Waterfalls. You can explore a range of trails, from moderate to difficult, including routes like "The Sentiero delle Cascate del Catafurco" or "Mistretta and the Valley of the Waterfalls." For more details on these and other trails, refer to the Hiking in Messina guide or the Waterfall hikes in Messina guide.

Can I reach the Alcantara Gorges by public transport?

Yes, public transport options are available to reach the Alcantara Gorges. Buses typically connect from nearby towns like Taormina or Giardini Naxos. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the most current information on routes and timings to the main entrance areas.

Are there any hidden gems or less crowded canyons to explore?

For a more secluded experience, consider the Stretta di Longi in the Nebrodi Mountains. It offers pristine natural pools and river trekking away from the main tourist crowds. The Gurne dell'Alcantara is also noted by visitors as being less crowded than the main Alcantara Gorge, offering beautiful views and bathing opportunities.

What should I know about swimming in the canyon waters?

The water in the Alcantara Gorges is notably cold year-round, even in summer, due to its volcanic origins. Both the Alcantara Gorges and Stretta di Longi offer opportunities for swimming in natural pools. It's important to be aware of water levels, especially after heavy rains, as some areas might be partially closed due to flood risks.

What kind of geological formations are found in the Alcantara Gorges?

The Alcantara Gorges are renowned for their unique geological formations, primarily the hexagonal basalt columns. These were formed when ancient lava flows from Mount Etna met the icy waters of the Alcantara River, causing rapid cooling and fracturing of the volcanic material into distinct prismatic structures. These formations can be seen in various configurations, including 'woodpiles,' 'harps,' 'rosettes,' and impressive 'organ pipes' that can reach up to 30 meters in height.

Are there any historical or cultural points of interest near the canyons?

While the canyons themselves are primarily natural wonders, areas like the Stretta di Longi hold historical-anthropological interest with remnants of ancient watermills and a fulling mill along the Fitalia river. The region surrounding the Alcantara Gorges, part of the Alcantara River Park, also features charming villages that offer a glimpse into local Sicilian culture.

What are the difficulty levels for exploring Messina's canyons?

Difficulty levels vary. The Gurne dell'Alcantara can be reached via an easy hiking trail. Exploring the main Alcantara Gorge involves walking paths and wading through the river, which can be intermediate depending on how far you venture. Activities like river trekking and canyoning can range from moderate to difficult, requiring appropriate gear and sometimes guided tours. Always check specific route details for the most accurate difficulty assessment.
