Covão dos Conchos is an artificial lagoon located in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Portugal, near the mountain village of Sabugueiro. Covão dos Conchos became famous for its bell-mouth spillway[1]. The spillway was built in 1955 to allow water to be transferred from the Ribeira das Naves River to Lagoa Comprida. It is part of the Serra da Estrela Hydroelectric System. This science fiction-style spillway became famous when photographs of the hole went viral on social media in 2016. Over the past 60 years, the growth of vegetation at the funnel's mouth has created extraordinary biodiversity and increased its ethereal allure. It is 4.6 meters high and 48 meters in circumference. The tunnel that collects the water is 1,519 meters long.

Next to the Nave de Santo António, the Covão do Ferro or Padre Alfredo dam, inaugurated in 1956, uses a glacial cirque and collects water from the Alforfa stream. It was commissioned by Father Alfredo to supply electricity to the wool industry in Unhais da Serra. Unhais da Serra can be seen in the background.

Located within the Planalto Superior biogenetic reserve, the Rossim Valley is a unique location of great scientific, environmental, and scenic value that deserves to be protected and enhanced. Although it is an artificial lake, over time, conditions have been created that have transformed this area into an excellent leisure and recreation area that attracts countless tourists. The Vale do Rossim recreation center is located at an average altitude of 1,437 meters. Before the dam was built, it was one of the best high-altitude pastures in the municipality of Gouveia. The area has almost always been frequented by transhumance herds, flocks that gathered here from São João to the Sr. do Calvário festivities in August.

The second half (from Covão dos Conchos) is impassable and in some places only possible with orientation using stone markers (stacks). Nevertheless, it's a beautiful hike with views.

This restaurant and bar is located right on the lake (there's nothing else in the area), and it's nice to sip a nice beer 🍺 and grab a bite to eat after a sunny day or a nice hike. Also... For those who want to stay longer, there's the Vale do Rossim Eco Resort: camping, equipped yurts, or wooden cabins, with the option of half-board at a reasonable price at this lakeside restaurant. Breakfast is good, dinner is very simple, but all drinks are included, including a bottle of wine 🍷 🤪.

Among the most notable lakes are Long Lake (Lagoa Comprida), the largest water reservoir and a starting point for trails, and Vale do Rossim Reservoir, known for its clear waters and being the highest river beach. Another unique spot is Covão dos Conchos Trail, famous for its bell-mouth spillway, accessible via a scenic 5 km trail from Long Lake.
Yes, several lakes offer family-friendly experiences. Vale do Rossim Reservoir is ideal for picnics, sunbathing, and gentle strolls. The trail to Covão dos Conchos is also considered family-friendly, though good shoes are recommended due to some scree sections.
The lakes in the Serra da Estrela Mountains are excellent for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy hiking, with trails ranging from easy to difficult, such as the Faias Trail or the more challenging Covão dos Conchos Trail. Absolutely. The most famous unique feature is the bell-mouth spillway at Covão dos Conchos, an engineering marvel that looks like a natural sinkhole. The region is also characterized by its glacial origin, with visible glacial scars along the banks of lakes like Long Lake. Waterfalls like Poço do Inferno also create impressive natural lagoons.
The Serra da Estrela Mountains are home to approximately 25 glacial lakes. Long Lake is a prime example, occupying a wide glacial depression with visible glacial scars. Lagoa Escura is also noted for being impressively well-preserved and part of the network of high-altitude glacial lagoons.
While popular spots are well-loved, exploring the 'Route of the Lakes' starting from Long Lake can lead you to less-frequented spots like Lagoa Redonda and Laguna Seca (which can be dry by late August). Covão do Boeiro, a large natural amphitheater with a seasonal lagoon, also offers stunning and imposing landscapes away from the main crowds.
The region offers a variety of hiking trails. You can find easy walks suitable for families, such as those mentioned in the Easy hikes in the Serra da Estrela Mountains guide. For more experienced hikers, there are moderate to difficult trails, including the Covão dos Conchos Trail and other routes detailed in the Hiking in the Serra da Estrela Mountains guide. Many trails offer scenic views of the mountain's rocky landscape and connect various lakes.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking natural beauty and the unique geological formations. The surreal appearance of Covão dos Conchos is a major draw.
