Nice straight climb that makes a nice turn at the end. It goes up quite steeply and you can see the climb coming, which makes it extra impressive. The asphalt on the east side near Kleve is not great. When you are at the top and descend towards the west, it is fine. In that respect, it is therefore advisable to ride from east to west. The 2nd "summit" on today's tour. Here, too, the term summit applies to Lower Rhine conditions. But with today's sultry weather, you'll be sweating profusely.

One of many other mountains here in the forest. If you ski down all of them, you will also get a few meters of altitude in this area.

Visitors to the Reichswald particularly enjoy the Hunsköbel summit marker, which, despite its modest 62-meter altitude, is a popular spot. Another favorite is the challenging Geldenberg Climb from Frasselt, known for its steep, paved sections with inclines up to 14%. The Jan Hilltop (66 m) – Reichswald is also highly rated, offering both natural beauty and historical significance.
Yes, the Geldenberg Climb from Frasselt offers a short but crisp challenge for cyclists, with inclines reaching up to 14%. While the asphalt isn't always perfectly maintained, it's generally suitable for road bikes when dry.
The Reichswald holds significant historical importance, particularly from World War II. The Jan Hilltop (66 m) – Reichswald served as a front-line during the 1944 winter, and traces of Nazi trenches are still visible near its summit. The entire forest was also the site of the Battle of the Reichswald in February 1945, and the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery is nearby.
The Reichswald is primarily a large, coherent mixed deciduous forest, dominated by copper beech, with areas of oak and conifer. It's largely under landscape and nature protection, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You'll find gentle wooded hills, extensive woodlands, and a rich ecosystem that is home to endangered species like the golden oriole and black woodpecker.
The highest point in the Reichswald is the Rupenberg, reaching an elevation of 95 to 96 meters. It's a wooded hill popular for outdoor activities, with numerous routes for hiking and cycling.
The gentle hills and extensive woodlands of the Reichswald make it suitable for various fitness levels, including families. Many trails are relatively easy, such as the 'Scenic Forest Trails loop from Hauberg' which is an easy 4.8 km hike. You can find more options on the Hiking around Reichswald guide.
The Reichswald offers a wide range of outdoor activities. You can enjoy hiking on trails like the 'Pöhlhögt (60 m) – Lenkenberg loop from De Bruuk' or 'Beginenberg (70 m) – Boerenpad De Sprung loop from De Bruuk' found in the Hiking around Reichswald guide. Cycling is also popular, with routes like the 'Niersauen – Col du St. Jean loop from Milsbeek' available in the Cycling around Reichswald guide. Mountain biking is also a great option, with many trails offering fun descents.
The hills in the Reichswald are not traditional mountains but rather a ridge formed by glaciers during the Ice Age. This glacial ridge, composed of gravel with a high loam content, stands out from the otherwise flat Rhine plain. This unique geological formation makes the area interesting for geography enthusiasts.
Beyond the more popular spots, the Reichswald features several other named elevations. These include the Höttenkop (50 m) and the Jäje Summit Marker (54 m), which is one of 31 stones placed to mark the forest's peaks. These smaller elevations offer additional points for exploration within the extensive woodland.
The Reichswald is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn offer particularly pleasant conditions for hiking with milder temperatures and vibrant foliage. During rainy periods, unpaved roads can become muddy due to the glacial loam, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
Visitors frequently praise the Reichswald for its extensive natural beauty, quiet forest trails, and the variety of recreational opportunities for hiking and cycling. The historical significance, particularly the visible WWII trenches and the war cemetery, also adds a unique dimension to the experience, offering a blend of nature and history.
