In Bulgaria we call it "gliganing" ("wild boaring") because there is no path through the mountain pine/pinus mugo ("Chernata skala" peak is rounded by mountain pine and there is no way to workaround it). Very good views - Cherni vrah, Sofia, Kopitoto and many Vitosha huts. Really really nice, but keep in mind that it is hard for walking. Smart people (not like me) uses long pants for this tour in order to easily pass the mountain pine. It is very rare to meet people on the upper part of this track. Check the tour: https://www.komoot.com/tour/197282573/zoom : There is no path or the path is not visible from the river to the forest. In the forest there is a nice visible path. After the forest there is a path from time to time but then when the mountain pine starts to enclose the peak - the path is lost and you start fighting with it alone. I hurried on my way back so I wasn't looking for a path there (it might be (or not) such path available on this side).

There are many people. If you want to buy food in the hut, prepare for the long wait.

The highest point of the Vitosha, perfect for fast walk from Sofia. You can reach the peak from many places: Aleko, Zheleznitsa, Zvezditsa hut, Zlatnite mostove, Selimitsa hut, etc.. You can have pancakes early in the morning or soups, but during the week it is closed. Usually it is overcrowded, but you can find place on south.

There is a beautiful view to Sofia. You may want to pass this peak if you want to go to Cherni vrah peak and want to avoid the steep climb just before Cherni vrah, but at the cost of more distance. There was a lift there but the neglect of Vitosha ski led to its closure (as many other lifts in Vitosha)... :(

When you climb the steep hill you can take a deserved rest enjoying the beautiful view. Actually the peak is nearby and you can go there or stay on the path.

Yes, Chernata Skala Peak offers a challenging experience. Hikers often describe it as a fight through mountain pine, with no clear path in some sections. Despite the difficulty, it rewards with very good views of Cherni Vrah, Sofia, and other Vitosha huts.
Vitosha is famous for its unique 'stone rivers' (Moreni), which are ribbons of huge boulders, remnants of ancient glaciers. Zlatnite Mostove (The Golden Bridges) is the most well-known example. The Vitosha Nature Park also boasts rich biodiversity, including 1,500 species of higher plants and diverse forests.
Beyond peak bagging, Vitosha offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous cycling routes, such as the 'Bike loop from Boyana Church' or 'Tepeto – Gradishte loop from Yarlovo'. There are also running trails, including the 'Черни връх – хижа Алеко loop from Aleko hut', and waterfall hikes like the 'Rock With a View of Sofia – Alekovi Waterfalls loop from kv. Dragalevtsi'. For more details, explore the Cycling in Vitosha, Running Trails in Vitosha, and Waterfall hikes in Vitosha guides.

On Cherni Vrah Peak, the meteorological station also functions as a shelter for hikers and a base for the mountain rescue team. While it can be crowded, especially on weekends, it offers a place to rest and potentially purchase food during operating hours.
Visitors particularly enjoy the amazing views over Sofia from Kamen Del Peak. It's considered an easily accessible place for a moderate half-day excursion, offering serene trails through beautiful woods and an ideal spot for photography and quiet reflection.
When hiking to Cherni Vrah Peak, be aware that it can be very crowded, especially on weekends. While there's a hut where you can buy food, prepare for potentially long waits. It's advisable to start early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the panoramic views more peacefully.
