Best waterfalls around Barbarano Romano are primarily located within the Marturanum Regional Park, a region defined by its tuff cliffs and the deep ravines of the Gole del Biedano. This area, historically significant with Etruscan and Roman traces, features a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity. The Biedano stream carves through dense woods, creating a series of smaller waterfalls and enchanting small lakes. The park offers a combination of natural beauty and archaeological interest.

May 2023 - the path is not really developed but rather a wild path - so go on the adventure with long pants and sturdy shoes. My tip would be to go to the ruins of the third mill. It is an ancient dam with two breakthroughs and therefore two waterfalls. Carefully go over the wall (!) Crashing wouldn't be a good idea...then go right. into the ancient man-made aqueduct. The tunnel is over 2 meters high and was probably a regulated inflow/outflow from the mill. The top highlight of this valley.

Wonderful route to be done preferably on sunny days. The journey is quite easy and can be done with any type of clothing but will be more enjoyable if equipped with technical clothing and a pair of trekking shoes. If you want to complete the ring on foot up to the starting point, you will have covered about 9 km, so it is better to bring a snack and a suitable supply of water.

At this point the path runs alongside the Fosso Mazzano which creates lush waterfalls surrounded by nature.

Unfortunately we were unable to go beyond the first kilometer as the path was completely invaded by too tall and stinging plants that did not allow us to see where our feet were resting which led us to a close encounter with a snake. I hope for a future remediation in order to properly enjoy the experience. On the other hand, the Etruscan dovecote and the dark quarry are truly suggestive.

At the time of my visit (20 September 2021), access to the stairs leading to the red path and therefore to the waterfall was forbidden to transit.

The area around Barbarano Romano, particularly within the Gole del Biedano (Biedano Gorges) in the Marturanum Regional Park, features a series of smaller, picturesque waterfalls and cascades rather than grand, singular falls. These are formed by the Biedano stream carving through deep ravines and impressive tuff cliffs, creating a wild and lush natural landscape. You'll find enchanting small lakes and a continuous flow of water, especially after rainfall.
Yes, the waterfalls are primarily accessed via hiking trails within the Gole del Biedano and Marturanum Regional Park. These trails offer scenic walks through dense woods and along the Biedano stream. For example, the Biedano Valley Trail from Blera to Via Cava delle Quercete is a notable route that includes waterfall views. You can find more hiking options in the area on our Hiking around Barbarano Romano guide.
The trails through the Gole del Biedano are rich in history. You can encounter ancient mills, such as the Terza Mola (Third Mill) Waterfalls and Ancient Aqueduct, and even secret tunnels carved into the rock. The area was historically used by Etruscans and Romans, so you might also find Etruscan tombs and ancient Roman bridges, like the suggestive "Ponte del Diavolo".
The best time to visit is generally during spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the vegetation is vibrant. After periods of rainfall, the Biedano stream's flow is stronger, making the waterfalls more impressive. During late summer, like August, the water flow can be significantly reduced, as noted by visitors to Diosilla Falls.
Many trails in the Marturanum Regional Park are suitable for families and dogs, offering a chance to immerse yourselves in nature. However, some paths can be challenging or overgrown, as experienced near Terza Mola. Always check current trail conditions and ensure your family and pets are comfortable with moderate terrain. Proper footwear is recommended.
Given the natural and sometimes rugged terrain, it's advisable to wear sturdy trekking shoes. Technical clothing can enhance your comfort. Bringing a snack and a suitable supply of water is recommended, especially for longer routes like the Biedano Valley Trail, which can be around 9 km if completing a loop.
Key spots include the Terza Mola (Third Mill) Waterfalls and Ancient Aqueduct, known for its historical structures and a rock tunnel path. Diosilla Falls offers a beautiful natural setting, though water flow varies seasonally. You can also explore the lush cascades of Fosso Mazzano Waterfalls, where the path runs alongside the stream.
Beyond hiking to the waterfalls, the region around Barbarano Romano offers diverse outdoor activities. Parking availability can vary depending on the specific trailhead you choose within the Marturanum Regional Park. It's generally advisable to research parking options for your chosen starting point before your visit, especially in peak seasons, as direct access to some waterfall areas might be limited to footpaths.
Visitors frequently praise the tranquility and natural beauty of the Gole del Biedano. The dense forest, the continuous flow of the Biedano stream, and the splendid colors of the small lakes create a serene environment. The combination of natural exploration with historical elements, such as ancient mills and Etruscan sites, also adds a unique and enriching dimension to the experience.
Yes, access can sometimes be restricted. For instance, at Diosilla Falls, access to the stairs leading to the red path and the waterfall was temporarily forbidden at one point. It's always a good idea to check local signage and conditions before venturing onto trails, especially after heavy rains or during specific seasons, as paths can become overgrown or difficult to navigate.
