This route is absolutely a very challenging one! We started hiking from Rotzo with children aged 5 to 10. It's just manageable up to the waterfalls and a very beautiful hike. At the waterfall itself, there's a pleasant flat section but with dangerously deep drops. The return route is downright dangerous from the start and not recommended. We explored the route a bit further, and there it's even risky for adults. Many other hikers turned back as well.

The route is very suggestive and challenging. In addition, Contrà Pria in the summer is a destination for many bathers and tourists with services that have nothing to envy of a seaside resort. Luciano

The Val Canale is the largest drainage basin descending from the southern slope of the Pasubio massif, as well as the most direct, short but fairly steep route to the Papa Refuge. After an initial stretch through a beautiful forest, the landscape opens up onto the valley itself, with the trail advancing between high walls and rocky spurs, occasionally crossing scree and scree: a highly evocative climb. During the First World War, before the construction of the Road of the 52 Tunnels in 1917, it was the main Italian route to the Pasubio Gates, the immediate rear of the front: in addition to the mule track, cableways ensured supplies for the army. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Canale_(Pasubio)

Beautiful route for EE (Expert Hikers) as in just a few km there is a huge difference in altitude. The route is steep at times, almost like a climb, at times sheer, so be careful not to slip otherwise you will arrive directly down. This road connects directly if I'm not mistaken with the 41st tunnel, from there you continue and reach the Papa refuge

The Astico river here makes its way between rocks and canyons and creates wonderful pools of emerald water. They are swimmable, there is some small beach and shade. Ample parking.

Yes, the Contrà Pria Pools are a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. The Astico torrent has carved natural pools and small bays with crystal-clear waters, some reaching depths of up to 9 meters, making it ideal for a refreshing dip. However, diving from the bridge is prohibited for safety reasons.
Yes, the Canale Valley (Pasubio) holds significant historical importance. It was a primary route to the Pasubio massif during the First World War, serving as the main Italian supply route before the construction of the Road of the 52 Tunnels. Val Fontana d'Oro was also an ancient route to climb Pasubio, later transformed into a military mule track during WWI.
While the summer months are popular for swimming and sunbathing at spots like Contrà Pria Pools, visiting during the off-season is often recommended to avoid crowds and fully appreciate the tranquility and natural beauty of the area. For waterfalls like the Pach waterfall, the ideal time to visit is after heavy rains to see it in full flow, though trails can be treacherous then.
The Contrà Pria Pools are generally considered family-friendly for relaxation and swimming. However, some areas like the Pach waterfall trail can be very challenging and even dangerous for children, especially the return route. Always check specific trail difficulties and visitor tips before heading out with family.
The region offers a variety of hiking experiences. For instance, the Val Fontana d'Oro is a wild and spectacular route, considered challenging (EE) due to its steep, rocky, and exposed sections. The Canale Valley (Pasubio) also offers a steep but highly evocative climb. You can find more detailed hiking routes in the Mountain Hikes around Arsiero guide.
Yes, several areas offer challenging experiences. The Val Fontana d'Oro is known for its steep, rocky, and exposed sections, rated as 'Expert Hikers' (EE). The Canale Valley (Pasubio) also presents a steep and demanding climb. Even the trail to the Pach waterfall can be very challenging and treacherous, especially after rain.
Visitors describe the Contrà Pria Pools as an amazing place with crystal-clear waters, often comparing its beauty to the waters of Sardinia. It's highly recommended for group visits and is appreciated for its natural beauty and opportunities for relaxation and swimming.
The Siesòn Cave (or Sciasòn Chasm) is an impressive and spectacular sinkhole. While there are protective barriers, visitors are advised to exercise caution, especially in colder months, as ice can make the area very slippery. The chasm descends 46 meters as a well and continues to an overall depth of -96 meters, with a natural skylight illuminating its dark mouth.
Beyond exploring the canyons, Arsiero offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous mountain hikes, such as the 'Achille Papa Hut – Strada Scarubbi loop', detailed in the Mountain Hikes around Arsiero guide. There are also running trails, including the 'Astico River Trail – Contrà Pria Pools loop' in the Running Trails around Arsiero guide, and challenging MTB trails like the 'Anello di Monte Toraro' in the MTB Trails around Arsiero guide.
Yes, the Pach waterfall is a charming spot hidden in the heart of the forest. The Pach stream cascades over a thirty-meter drop amidst lush vegetation. However, due to its torrential nature and increasingly dry seasons, it's a matter of luck to find it actively flowing rather than a trickle, with the best viewing after heavy rains.
To avoid crowds, especially at popular spots like Contrà Pria Pools, it is often recommended to visit during the off-season rather than the peak summer months. Weekdays are also generally less busy than weekends.
