The estate owner at the time, Count Christoph Rantzau, promptly had 15 men and women arrested and sentenced to death for harmful magic, as jurisdiction at that time lay with the landowners, to whom the peasants were subject. Although Pastor Linekogel of Giekau desperately tried to obtain a postponement of the executions, because many of the accused had recanted their confessions to him, Count Rantzau did not relent. Even when the accused explained that they had only confessed to everything to avoid torture, the estate owner remained relentless, and the condemned were first strangled and then burned at the stake. A more detailed account of the events can be found in the Schwartbuck village chronicle. To commemorate these horrific events, the Giekau artist Jan Koberstein, with the support of many helpers, created this impressive work of art between 2012 and 2018.
