Even in the middle of a drought year there was some water.

Must have been a mill or workshop that worked with water power. Rotating waves can be seen. The basement of the building is about 10 meters further down the gorge. At the top of the street you can see the third floor. Very interesting to see it up close!

Up in the hills between Casa Rural Bons Aires and Alcoi we accidentally stumbled upon waterfalls. Quite impressive, frankly. From the point where you see the falls, there is a path that leads downhill, and that follows the Riu Barxell, a river that joins the Riu de Polop, which flows towards Alcoi.

From Casa Rural Bons Aires it takes about 20 minutes to reach the Riu de Polop, a small river that flows towards Alcoi. In the weekend you will find lots of tourists here. Not all of them seem to have found this spot on foot. There may be a parking somewhere. The paths next to the river can be very muddy in the winter or in spring. Your shoes will literally grow in size as they accumulate light gray layers of very sticky clay. This route was recorded on the 8th of May, after a period of heavy rains. Normally you can walk to Alcoi along the river, but this was not possible now. Not on sneakers anyway. In stead of following the river, we hiked uphill for a bit to skip a large part of muddy trails. An extra advantage is the solitude that you find in the hills.

Among the most notable waterfalls, you'll find Racó of Saint Bonaventure, a picturesque river area with a waterfall and picnic facilities. Another significant spot is the Pantanet Ravine Waterfall, which is intimately connected to the historic Molí Rupestre (Cave Mill). You can also discover the Río Polop Waterfall, which offers paths along a small river.
Yes, Racó of Saint Bonaventure is considered family-friendly, offering picnic facilities and various paths suitable for all ages. The route to the Pantanet Ravine Waterfall is also well-maintained with small elevation changes, making it accessible for family walks and excursions.
The Pantanet Ravine Waterfall is a unique blend of natural scenery and archaeological interest. It's directly linked to the Molí Rupestre del Pantanet, a medieval flour mill carved into the rock, possibly dating back to the Andalusian period. You can also see the ruins of another mill nearby, known as 'Casa del Pantanet'.
The waterfalls in Alfafara, particularly seasonal ones like Peña del Chorro, are most prominent after rainfall. For a more consistent experience, visiting during spring or after periods of heavy rain will ensure fuller cascades. However, paths next to the Río Polop Waterfall can be very muddy in winter or spring, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
Absolutely. The View of El Salt Waterfall is situated directly on the GR7 hiking trail. Additionally, the Racó of Saint Bonaventure offers several paths for hiking, and the route to the Pantanet Ravine Waterfall is part of pleasant hiking routes.
Beyond hiking to the waterfalls, the region offers various outdoor activities. You can explore gravel biking routes, tackle challenging MTB trails, or enjoy running trails through the scenic landscape.
Yes, the Peña del Chorro is a notable seasonal cascade in Alfafara. Its name, derived from the Arabic 'ALFAWARA' meaning 'the fountain that springs up with violence,' refers to a waterfall that flows forcefully from the top of this rock primarily during rainy seasons.
Given that paths, especially near the Río Polop Waterfall, can be very muddy after heavy rains, it's advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes. Layers of clothing are also recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions.
While the main waterfalls are well-documented, the region's terrain includes various ravines and rock formations that can reveal smaller, less-known cascades, especially after significant rainfall. Exploring the paths around the Barranc del Pantanet might lead to such discoveries.
Visitors appreciate the blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Many enjoy the tranquility and picturesque settings, such as the quiet environment around the Pantanet Ravine Waterfall. The opportunity to combine nature walks with exploring ancient mills and historical sites is also a highlight.
