In the summer of 1882, the inhabitants of the Mertl farm (Wernersreuth No. 15) worked on the "Weiheracker". It was harvest time, they worked with sickles and tied the grain into sheaves. A small child of the family was brought to the edge of the field in a fodder trough, in which it slept. While working, the father saw a wolf slinking through the bushes bordering the field. Recently, there had been warnings in the area about a wolf: one should lie down on the ground and not move. That is exactly what the people did. They thought with horror of the helpless child in the trough. But the wolf slunk past and did not harm the sleeping child. Out of gratitude, a "Marterl" (memorial cross) was erected at that spot. This "Marterl" has the peculiarity that it is made entirely of wood - a unique item in the old Kemnath district. The artful carvings below the upper part of the "Marterl" are truly worth seeing.
