Sheepfold Voskuilenheuvel

Highlight β€’ Mountain Hut

Voskuilenheuvel is a nature reserve of 18 hectares located 1 km northwest of Venhorst. In 2012, the area was expanded by 6 ha. There will be far fewer trees there than in the older area.

It concerns a piece of coniferous forest, including heathland and a marsh area, which is owned by the municipality of Boekel. When the Peel was reclaimed, this area turned out to be unsuitable for agriculture, as it was partly too dry and partly too wet.

Since 1989, it has been recreated by volunteers from Boekel and Venhorst, cooperating in the Peel landscape park Voskuilenheuvel Foundation, into a piece of Peel landscape with heathland and fens. An old-fashioned sheepfold has also been reconstructed.

The area is grazed by a herd of 15 Kempen heath sheep. It is freely accessible and a circular walk has been set out. You can also view the marsh area via a platform, where the small sundew can be admired. Some notable sightings are: the evening primrose pintail (2014), the hoopoe (2017) and the large fox (2014).

On the edge of the Wijboschbroek nature reserve stands the Schijndel Sheepfold. It's one of the most beautiful spots in Schijndel. Besides the typical cultural heritage rebuilt here, it's especially the unique traditional Dutch sheep that invite you to visit this special location. The Sheepfold isn't just a pleasant resting place for visitors, cyclists, and hikers. Workshops and educational projects for all ages also regularly take place. Refreshments are available inside and on the adjacent terrace of 't Skupke. The Sheepfold volunteers are present daily. If the gate is open, you're welcome to come and have a look. Feel free to explore the beautiful garden, the pond, and the beehives behind the Hop-est. The Sheepfold volunteers are present Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

At Landgoed de Barendonk, historical elements and a modern view of entrepreneurship are a common thread through all the stories. The estate now has a camping site and the old buildings have been converted into attractive accommodations for overnight stays and meetings. Various walking routes have been set out, such as the gnome path, the Barendonk cow path and the walking experience path "De Vluchtroute".
