May 21, 2025, Camino de Petracos - Remote Beauty & Ancient Rock Art

About halfway up the narrow road toward Petracos, there's a path leading to one of the Costa Blanca’s hidden gems: the prehistoric rock paintings of Les Coves de Pintures Rupestres de la Sarga de Petracos. These sacred cave sites are over 6,000 years old and are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage. The paintings are protected behind fences but still visible — abstract symbols, anthropomorphic figures, and mysterious shapes left by early Iberian cultures. It’s absolutely worth a stop for a moment of silence and awe — but be warned: the trail isn’t cycling-shoe friendly. You’ll either need cleat covers or the willingness to carry your bike over rocky steps for a short hike. 😅 A unique mix of nature, history, and quiet that most riders simply roll past.

The Cova de les Finestres is located in the Barranc del Pont Trencat, in the municipality of Alfafara. These artificial caves from the Andalusian period look like windows from the outside and are carved in the middle of a steep cliff, generally in river valleys and ravines. It consists of 12 window caves, precisely carved into the hard limestone rock. These windows, looking out into the void, are between 4 and 10 meters high, on a large natural shelter. From a distance, their presence arouses curiosity and intrigue, and questions arise: What secrets are they hiding? Are there rooms behind them? What was its function?

The corrals were mainly used to keep livestock in winter. The abundance of these buildings makes us think about the importance of livestock farming to feed a large population in a mountainous area. The animals made it possible to take advantage of mountain lands that were not suitable for agriculture and produced food rich in protein and fertilizer to improve the productivity of the land.

The Cova Alta d'Albaida. The marked descent routes from the cross to the Cave are not well marked and there are some technical and slightly dangerous sections. If the Cave is accessed from below, no problem.
