Starting point A is not safely located. It leads through impassable terrain or over non-existent paths. We aborted our descent from the bridge (Highlight 1) to starting point A and, thanks to the friendly guides at the bridge, were able to use it for the safe return to our car. Anyone who wants to do the whole loop should book a ticket for crossing the bridge in advance. Attention: limited ticket contingent per day.

This small suspended walkway appears discreetly along the wooden path that leads to the imposing 516 Arouca bridge. Here, you cross the Paiva River in a more intimate and serene way, feeling the water flowing below while the sounds of nature surround you. A kind of charming appetizer before the great spectacle of the main crossing.

From here, the views over the lush green valley of the Deilão river, a tributary of the Paiva river, are simply breathtaking. The steep slopes that embrace the Drave and Covas do Monte valleys offer some of the most impressive panoramas in the region.

If you cross the bridge at Alvarenga and then take the wooden walkway along the Rio Paiva to Espiunca, you should remember that you will need a taxi from there back to the starting point. A later return via the Arouca bridge is not possible. However, if you just want to walk across the bridge and back, this is no problem with your ticket booking (online). The Alvarenga side is recommended for people who want to avoid the many wooden steps and just want the pure bridge experience.

After the forest fires on September 24, only the bridge is still open. Hopefully the repairs will go quickly.

Beautiful "wooden path" with impressive views. There are lots of stairs to climb up and down, especially the way back has to be taken into account, or halfway there at 2.5km (from the entrance) you can order a taxi from the nice guy. The suspension bridge is impressive... all in all a great experience with swimming opportunities to cool off... we were there at 39*. Part of the path is shaded.

The wooden staircase construction must first be conquered, there are around 500 steps to the top. But in return you get a great view of the narrow valley, which has been carved by the Paiva River over millions of years. Because the stone is very hard, the gorge is V-shaped.

While Cabreiros itself is known for its cultural heritage, the wider region of northern Portugal offers impressive river gorges. The most prominent are the gorges of the Paiva River, home to the Paiva Walkways and 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge. These are often the natural features people are referring to when asking about 'canyons' in this area.
The trails, particularly the Paiva Walkways, are generally rated as intermediate. They involve wooden walkways and numerous stairs, with some sections requiring significant ascent and descent. For example, the path up to the 516 Arouca bridge includes over 600 steps. While challenging in parts, the views are highly rewarding.
The Paiva Walkways section alone can take up to 2.5 hours, depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the views. If you include crossing the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge, plan for a longer visit, especially if you intend to walk back or wait for a taxi.
The Paiva Walkways can be enjoyed by families, but be aware of the intermediate difficulty and the presence of many stairs. Younger children or those with limited mobility might find some sections challenging. The experience of crossing the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge is also a unique adventure for families.
Visiting during spring or autumn generally offers more comfortable temperatures for hiking. Summer can be very hot, with temperatures reaching 39°C, as noted by visitors. Booking your time slot for the Paiva Walkways and the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge online in advance is highly recommended, regardless of the season, to ensure entry.
You can expect sensational views of the narrow, V-shaped valleys carved by the Paiva River over millions of years. Highlights like the Panoramic view of the Covas do Monte valley offer breathtaking vistas over lush green valleys and steep slopes. The 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge itself provides a unique perspective from 175 meters above the river.
Yes, visitors have mentioned swimming opportunities to cool off, especially during hot weather. The Paiva River offers spots where you can take a refreshing dip after exploring the walkways and bridge.
Beyond exploring the gorges, the region offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous cycling routes, including challenging road cycling and touring bicycle options like the "Ecovia do Rio Arda" or "Serra da Freita Loop." There are also many running trails, such as the "Frecha da Mizarela Trail." For more details, explore the Cycling around Cabreiros, Running Trails around Cabreiros, and Road Cycling Routes around Cabreiros guides.
Given the intermediate difficulty and the presence of many stairs and wooden walkways, comfortable and sturdy footwear suitable for hiking is essential. Dress in layers, especially during warmer months, and bring sun protection. If you plan to swim, bring appropriate swimwear and a towel.
Yes, parking is available at the entrances to the Paiva Walkways. Visitors often mention that taxis are available at the end of the walkways (e.g., at Espiunca) to take you back to the starting point or parking lot, which costs around 15€.
Visitors consistently praise the impressive views, the unique experience of walking the wooden pathways, and the thrill of crossing the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge. The natural beauty of the river and the surrounding landscape, along with the well-maintained infrastructure, are frequently highlighted as major draws.
