The Tailors' Bastion is the only fortification tower from the old citadel that has survived completely to this day. The bastion was financed by the Cluj Tailors' Guild, which was also responsible for the city's defense at this point. The bastion forms the southeast corner of the medieval fortress, which was built starting in the 15th century (it is first mentioned in 1475). Between 1627 and 1629, the bastion was rebuilt according to the plans of the Italian architect Giacomo Resti after the gunpowder stored in the tower exploded as a result of a lightning strike. This is how it acquired its present form. To the north, a section of the stone wall with battlements and the guard route on the wall still survives.

Interesting castle built a thousand years ago! Not crowded and visited by many people. Paved road to the fortress.

Impressive castle which does not look old or in ruins, the castle is so well taken care of! The security guard kindly let us in at 8pm. Usually at that time, he does not give anyone permission to enter the castle. At 9pm, the castle lights up little by little and at around 9:15, you can see the castle clearly outside. Be careful because the main road is very crowded so if you do want to go south towards Jucu commune and Cluj-Napoca, please be aware of the cars that are passing by because there is no long sidewalk, cyclepath or anything like that. If you are not in a rush, turn towards Borșa/Borșa-Cătun on Drumul Bistriței and then turn left on a paved road near the end of Răscruci. There you cross Borșa river and you can see the map on komoot next.

Old and abandoned castle. Really worth seeing it if you live in Jucu and you have bikes. Otherwise, not a very touristic attraction. Recommend Bonțida which is around 5 km away as well as Nicula Monastery 31 km away. However, this is a nice location and the ride to this castle is under some trees, close to the Jucu Arena and La Doi Pași, where you can grab drinks.

The building is 24.5 meters long and the entrance is marked by six stone columns with Ionic capitals. The columns support a 9.5 meter long and 2.5 meter wide terrace. The walls are massive, 1 meter thick. The premises of the building were surrounded by a stone wall, a small part of which has been preserved, and on the left side of the entrance wall are the ruins of the built round tower.

The entrance to the castle also had an old suspension bridge that was raised at night or in case of danger. The gate was framed parallel to the entrance by unicorns, which also appear on the Kornis family coat of arms. The protector of the castle was the Mother of God, over whom the unicorns supposedly watched over. At the intersection of the diagonals of the complex there is an octagonal fountain surrounded by round columns and arches. In the northeastern part of the domain there is a pavilion built in 1825, which is structured on two sides with Doric columns. Unfortunately there is a lot of rubbish everywhere!

Bastion is the south-east corner of the medieval fortress, since the fifteenth century (it is already mentioned in 1475).

The region around Cluj-Napoca is rich in history. You can visit Tailors' Bastion, Cluj-Napoca, which is the only fully preserved fortification tower from the old citadel, first mentioned in 1475. Another significant site is Bánffy Castle in Bonțida, often called the 'Versailles of Transylvania,' known for its blend of Renaissance, Baroque, Classicist, and Romantic architectural styles. Though largely in ruins, the Kornis Castle Ruins in Mănăstirea offer a powerful sense of a bygone Renaissance era.
Yes, Tailors' Bastion, Cluj-Napoca is categorized as family-friendly and offers an accessible historical experience within the city. For a combination of history and nature, Wesselényi Castle in Jibou, though a bit further, features an extensive botanical garden that can be enjoyable for families.
Many castles are situated near areas perfect for outdoor activities. For instance, you can find various routes for road cycling, gravel biking, and hiking in the broader Cluj region. Explore options like the 'Bánffy Castle Bonțida – Kemény Castle (Jucu) loop' for gravel biking, or discover waterfall hikes. You can find more details on these activities in the Road Cycling Routes in Cluj, Gravel biking in Cluj, and Waterfall hikes in Cluj guides.
Wesselényi Castle in Jibou is an excellent choice, combining impressive Baroque architecture with a vast botanical garden spanning about 25 hectares and housing over 5,000 plant species. While Bánffy Castle in Bonțida is primarily known for its architecture, its historical French gardens were transformed into English-style landscape gardens, adding to its natural appeal.
Bánffy Castle in Bonțida has been undergoing extensive restoration efforts since 1999, with a Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre operating there. This allows visitors to see traditional building crafts in action. Teleki Castle in Gornești is also temporarily closed for restoration, with plans to reopen as a significant tourist attraction.
Beyond the more prominent sites, you might consider visiting Kemény Castle (Jucu), an old, abandoned castle that offers a pleasant ride under trees. Another interesting, less crowded option is the Dăbâca Medieval Fortress, a thousand-year-old castle with a paved road leading to it.
Absolutely. The Kornis Castle Ruins in Mănăstirea, once known as the 'castle with unicorns,' offers a poignant glimpse into a grand Renaissance past, despite being severely damaged. Similarly, Haller Castle Ruins (Coplean) features massive 1-meter thick walls and a preserved entrance marked by six stone columns, providing a sense of its former scale.
While specific opening hours vary, generally, spring and autumn offer pleasant weather for exploring both indoor and outdoor castle grounds. Summer can also be a good time, especially for events like the Electric Castle festival hosted at Bánffy Castle. Always check individual castle websites for current operating hours and seasonal considerations.
Bánffy Castle is notable for its blend of Renaissance, Baroque, Classicist, and Romantic styles. Teleki Castle in Gornești stands out with its simple Baroque grandeur, featuring an impressive central dome and uniquely, 52 rooms with 365 windows, symbolizing the weeks and days of the year.
For more details on Bánffy Castle, you can visit clujtourism.ro or its Wikipedia page. Information about the Jibou Botanical Garden, associated with Wesselényi Castle, can be found on its Wikipedia page.
Visitors often appreciate the rich historical context and the architectural diversity of the castles, from well-preserved bastions like Tailors' Bastion to evocative ruins.
