I cannot recommend enough Cabana Suru. Good food, lovely people. A few useful info: - there are several rooms with 7+ beds - running water and toilets available inside - shower available for a fee - weak GSM signal in the area, it depends on your carrier - make sure you have cash on you

I was there on a Saturday, and the grill was in full swing. I especially recommend the traditional grilled bulz. It's a polenta ball filled with burduf cheese.

There was talk at one point that it should be renovated again...is there any truth to this?

Since everything was full at first, we were kindly offered to sleep in the dining room. We ended up getting a bed in the dormitory for 150 lei. That was very nice, but not exactly cheap. In the evening, there was food available at the stated times, but the portions were really small (for 50 lei). We wanted to have lunch again before the descent at the stated lunchtime of 12-2 p.m., but when we asked, nothing was cooked. We then bought ourselves a Snickers and a Coke there and set off. So don't rely on the lunchtime meal times.

Simple, beautifully situated stone hut with large dormitories – thin wool blankets and pillows provided, sleeping bag recommended. Good drinking water from a mountain spring, very simple food (vegetarian options, however, only available upon reservation the night before!). There are toilets and sinks with cold water for washing. In summer, the dining room and dormitories are not heated in the evenings and at night. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m., allowing for an early start to Moldoveanu. The hut has comparatively high prices, which is understandable given its high and remote location. Reservations are a good idea in summer.

A large cabin with plenty of rooms, all the amenities (hot shower, toilet, double room, power outlets, toilet paper, soap), and good food, including vegetarian options. Sandwiches are also available for purchase for your trip. A bit more expensive and not as personal and welcoming as other small cabanas in the area, but absolutely fine.

For a truly rustic and immersive experience, consider COZO FANTU in the Cindrel Mountains, a former shepherd's hut accessible only by off-road SUV or horse-drawn cart. In the Făgăraș Mountains, Cabana Podragu offers a simple, high-altitude stay near a glacial lake, providing a traditional mountain refuge feel. Cabana lu' Doro in the Moașei Valley also provides an authentic natural setting, ideal for those seeking peace away from urban comforts.
While many huts cater to hikers, some options are more suitable for families. The Păltiniș Resort in the Cindrel Mountains offers a network of hotels, guesthouses, and cabins, serving as a great base for various activities. Additionally, the Rest Hut is categorized as family-friendly, suggesting a more accessible experience. For flexible group sizes, Casa de Sub Șipote și Căsuțele Ei in Porumbacu de Sus offers a main house and additional cottages with amenities like a garden and hot tub.
Amenities vary widely. Some huts, like Cabana Negoiu, have been renovated to offer modern comforts such as hot showers, electricity, and WiFi in common areas. Others, like Cabana Suru, provide running water, toilets, and showers for a fee. More remote options, such as COZO FANTU, offer basic amenities focused on a 'back to nature' experience. It's always advisable to check specific hut details for what to expect.
The best time for hiking to most huts is generally from late spring to early autumn (June to October). High-altitude huts like Cabana Podragu are typically open from June 15 to October 15. Winter offers opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing, with some chalets like Suru Chalet popular for winter sports. Always check weather conditions and hut availability, especially outside peak season.
Yes, many huts in the Făgăraș Mountains, known as the highest in the Romanian Carpathians, are reached via challenging trails. For example, MGS Cabin in the Cindrel Mountains requires a rewarding 4-5 hour hike from Rășinari village. Huts like Abandoned Prejba Cabin are specifically categorized as 'challenging' to reach. The Făgăraș ridge itself is known for multi-day, demanding treks.
The Sibiu region is rich in natural beauty. Huts in the Făgăraș Mountains offer breathtaking alpine scenery, with glacial lakes like the one near Cabana Podragu. Bâlea Lake is a stunning mountain lake often visited by hikers. Many huts, including MGS Cabin and Wanderlust Cottage Avrig, are praised for their 'great views' or 'most beautiful view in the Făgăraș Mountains'.
The huts serve as excellent bases for various outdoor activities. You can embark on challenging mountaineering routes, such as the Vârful Viștea Mare – Moldoveanu Peak Summit loop or the Călțun – Lăițel loop, accessible from areas like Transfăgărășan. There are also numerous hiking trails, including easy options around Păltiniș and Mediaș. Mountain biking is also popular, with trails like the Historic Old Town of Mediaș loop. For more details on routes, you can explore the Mountain Hikes in Sibiu or MTB Trails in Sibiu guides.
Access varies by hut. Some, like MGS Cabin, require a significant hike (4-5 hours from Rășinari village). Others, particularly those in resorts like Păltiniș, might be accessible by car or local transport to a certain point, followed by shorter hikes. Very remote huts, such as COZO FANTU, are not car-accessible and require specialized transport or a long trek. Public transport options to trailheads exist from Sibiu, but direct access to all huts is not guaranteed, and planning is essential.
While not widely publicized, COZO FANTU offers a unique 'back to nature' experience as a former shepherd's hut, providing an escape from crowds. Cabana lu' Doro in the Moașei Valley is another option for those seeking an authentic, peaceful retreat directly on the route to Suru Peak, emphasizing natural beauty over urban comforts.
Visitors frequently praise the 'great food,' 'heartfelt hosts,' and 'breathtaking scenery' at huts like MGS Cabin. The welcoming atmosphere, good food, and the opportunity to experience authentic Transylvanian culture are common highlights. Many appreciate the chance to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature, whether through challenging treks or tranquil retreats.
When staying at high-altitude huts like Cabana Podragu (at 2,136 meters), it's recommended to bring a sleeping bag, as only thin wool blankets are provided. Be aware that there might be no internet or network connection, and payment is often cash-only in Lei. Reservations are a good idea, especially in summer, and be prepared for simple food options, with vegetarian meals sometimes requiring advance notice. The dining room and dormitories are typically not heated at night.
Yes, some chalets are open year-round. For instance, Bârcaciu Chalet, located at 1,550 meters in the Făgăraș Mountains, is open throughout the year. However, high-altitude refuges like Cabana Podragu have specific operating seasons, typically from mid-June to mid-October. It's always best to check the individual hut's operating schedule before planning your trip.
