An Argentona
May 2, 2025, Posición San Simón

Remains of an old Civil War defensive position, located high on a hill between Monzón and Almunia de San Juan. Accessible via a dirt track, with a short but steep final slope. From the top, trenches, parapets, and some excavated lookout posts are preserved, as well as stunning views of the Cinca Valley and surrounding area. A historic spot, ideal for stopping, taking a breath, and reflecting on everything that happened in these mountains. Highly recommended for MTB or gravel routes in the area.

The church of Santa Ana was built in the 14th century and is known for its Gothic-Renaissance tower and its Mudejar style tower. Unfortunately, during the Civil War, all archives pertinent to the history of the church were lost.

This monument, also known as the San Simón Position, is a problematic and controversial tribute to the fallen of the Francoist army. This same building was built in the 1940s to commemorate Sergeant San Simón and his soldiers who fell in battle. In the area there are various signs of protest against this monument due to its relationship with La Falange.

We are in the Port of Alcubierre at an altitude of 624 meters and with wonderful views. From here we can take the path indicated to visit the Trenches of the Civil War (Las Tres Huegas)

Trenches that were used in the Spanish Civil War. This area was one of the areas where the armed battles were tougher and more lasting.

The English writer and journalist George Orwell participated as a volunteer of the Republic in the Monegros front. Following his story, trenches, bunkers and other elements that remained in the arid lands of the Aragonese steppe have been recovered. From here you can access a hill with a trench where the writer was, from which you can see the towers of Pilar de Zaragoza.
