From this small and narrow Wakenitz Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, located next to the railway line, you can enjoy truly exceptional views of the surrounding nature. Next door, on the other side of the tunnel under the railway line, is a lovely rest area with two benches and fantastic views over the Wakenitz. A must-see if you're in the area.

The Wakenitz is the natural outflow of Lake Ratzeburg. It leaves the lake at the northernmost point near Rothenhusen and runs in a north-northwesterly direction to the city of Lübeck. The Wakenitz, a right tributary of the Trave, is about 14.9 km long.

Until the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal (1896–1900), the Wakenitz flowed around the city hill of Lübeck and flowed into the Trave south of the city. After the canal was built, the Wakenitz was blocked off by a dam (Falkendamm) and drained via the culvert into the Krähenteich/Mühlenteich, among other places.

The Wakenitz forms the border between the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over long stretches.

Due to its wildness, which was also caused and supported by its remote location on the former inner-German border until 1989, the river is also called the "Amazon of the North".

Herrnburg Dunes

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Schleswig-Holstein section of the dune and heath landscape „Herrnburger Dünen“ is part of the „Wakenitz“ nature reserve. However, calling this wide sandy path a trail is slightly euphemistic. I would prefer the narrower paths around the Teufelsmoor or the paths directly over the dune (or what's left of it).

You can follow the former border along the Wakenitz. Before the fall of the Wall, nature lay asleep here for more than 30 years and was able to largely preserve its original appearance.
