Strada del Taffarel

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The fascinating Strada del Taffarel is a comfortable forest track with a mostly flat course and short ups and downs. It is surrounded by a beautiful beech forest whose origins date back to 1548, when the Republic of Venice established the "Gran Bosco de Reme di San Marco" here, whose tall trees were reserved for the production of oars for the galleys.

Also referred to as path F, it connects the road that goes up to Monte Pizzoc to the locality of Campon, snaking between bumps and small valleys, alternating slight plateaus with stretches of ascent. After passing the start of the path that sinks into the Vallorch valley, it crosses the Alta Via path no. 6, the detour to Malga Mezzomiglio and crosses the natural reserve of Pian Parrocchia - Campo di Mezzo (characterized by the mixed silver fir beech forest) before descending on the north side of Col Mazzuc.

Bus del Buson Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Narrow and deep gorge carved in remote times by the waters of the Ardo stream, which subsequently abandoned its course, lowering itself by about 150 meters. Recent theories attribute the origin of this fossil gorge to a subglacial torrent. Today this jewel of nature is walkable and is used as an extraordinary auditorium to host events.

The canyon extends for about 250 meters with a sinuous course; its smooth walls, deeply carved in the flint limestone of the Biancone, testify to the ancient working of the waters. In some places the width is just a few meters, while in the central part the rocky walls move away leaving large spaces.

Mount Pizzoc

Highlight • Summit

With its 1,565 m of altitude, Monte Pizzoc is one of the highest points of the Treviso Pre-Alps. The oronym Pizzòc derives from "pits-òc" or "small tip". On its top is the current Piazza della Pace. Inaugurated in 2006, it is the highest "square" in Europe. The area still shows the marks left by the calcium carbonate quarry that was disused before the 1950s. Here, starting from 1962, during the Cold War period, a NATO radar base was housed directly connected to the Pian Cansiglio missile base. Operationally closed in July 1977, it was definitively abandoned on August 21, 1979.

From its summit, on clear days, you can enjoy an exceptional and vast panorama that goes from the Euganean Hills to the Venetian Lagoon to the Gulf of Trieste. To the north, on the other hand, the Cavallo group and the Alpago mountains stand out. To the west, the Cesen - Col Visentin ridge, the Vallata and the Revine lakes. Just below the summit is the Città di Vittorio Veneto Refuge, known as Baracón, as it housed the quarry workers; during the Second World War it was also the seat of the command of the Cairoli Brothers Partisan Brigade.

In the popular belief, the mountain also acts as a meteorological indicator:
- "Se l'à la zhintùra, no'l dùra" or "If it shows the belt of clouds, the good weather does not last";
- "If l’à’ l penàzh, pióva a s’cìh e s’ciàch "or" If it has a plume, rain in pans ";
- "If l’à’ l capèl, al will bèl "or" If he has a hat, it will be beautiful ".

Alessio Furlan
May 13, 2026, Bus del Buson Gorge

One of the most peculiar places you can find in the Belluno Dolomites, and almost nobody knows it. The Bus del Buson is a fossil gorge: very high and smooth rock walls, total silence, no water — the Ardo stream changed its course millennia ago, leaving this canyon suspended in time. Short (approx. 1.5 hours) but challenging loop trail: the descent to the gorge is steep and the ground is slippery even in dry weather. Trekking shoes are essential, poles are recommended. To be avoided in rain or frost.

Unlike the classic Cansiglio loop, from Crosetta we descended towards Fregona for about 500 meters until reaching the 14% climb that leads to the Malghe trail. The route runs through Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the municipalities of Caneva and Polcenigo, through pastures. At km 7.41, we turn left to reach the Candaglia Forestry House and then resume the classic tour. We then reach Sant'Anna and Broz. From there, we climb back up to Campon to join the Taffarel.
