We really enjoyed this walk in a pretty flowery setting in April. Numerous passages in front of tombs in the necropolis, with a wider view of the necropolis at point 9. Note: 1) The detour around the Galleria bisanti tunnel between points 1 and 3 is chaotic. 2) At the end of the circuit between points 10 and 11, crossing the river with your feet in the water is not guaranteed depending on the season. We did it in early April and had water up to our thighs. Locate the ford at the beginning of the circuit towards point 1 or 2 to check the water level and decide whether or not to continue your circuit.

Yes, the natural monuments around Palazzolo Acreide are deeply intertwined with history. The Pantalica Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features thousands of tombs carved into the steep cliffs of the Anapo Gorge, dating from the 13th to 8th centuries BC. The Anapo Valley itself is known for approximately 1800 rock chamber tombs from 1200 to 800 BC, with some later expanded for use as dwellings.
The area offers diverse outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as those found in the Hiking around Palazzolo Acreide guide, including routes like the 'Ddieri di Bauli' circular tour. For cycling enthusiasts, there are MTB trails, with options like the 'Cava Cardinale loop from Canicattini Bagni' detailed in the MTB Trails around Palazzolo Acreide guide. Running trails are also available, with examples like 'From Canicattini to Casa Sant'Alfano' in the Running Trails around Palazzolo Acreide guide.
While many trails can be challenging, the natural pools at Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Pools offer a refreshing spot for swimming and are popular with visitors. The Anapo Valley also features a bike path along an old railway track, which can be a pleasant and relatively easy way for families to explore the landscape.
The natural monuments are generally enjoyable during warmer months, especially for activities like swimming in the natural pools. However, it's advisable to start early on hot days and wear reliable shoes for hiking. The area can be quite popular, so visiting outside of peak holiday times might offer a more tranquil experience.
Visitors describe the Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Pools as an almost enchanted place. They appreciate the clear, deep, and refreshing water for swimming. Yes, for experienced hikers, the Pantalica Necropolis is considered one of the most impressive, yet challenging, UNESCO World Heritage Sites to reach in Sicily, offering many panoramic trails within the Anapo Gorge Natural Reserve. Additionally, the Carubella Stone Steps in Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve are noted as among the more difficult points on certain routes, especially when descending due to slippery sections.
The nature reserves, particularly Pantalica, Valle dell'Anapo e Torrente Cava Grande, boast rich flora and fauna. Efforts are made to safeguard the protected area's vegetation, which includes holm oaks, oleanders, and various orchid species. The Grotta dei Pipistrelli (Bat Cave) in Pantalica is named for its large bat population, indicating the presence of diverse wildlife.
The duration of your visit depends on the specific natural monument and your planned activities. For sites like the Pantalica Necropolis, exploring the extensive archaeological zone and hiking the panoramic trails could take several hours or even a full day. A visit to the Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Pools for swimming and relaxation might also occupy a significant part of your day.
When visiting areas with natural pools like Cavagrande del Cassibile Natural Pools, be cautious on the stones, as they can be very slippery when wet. For hiking, especially on trails like those leading to Calcinara Stream, it's recommended to wear reliable shoes and start early, particularly on hot days. Some paths, like the Carubella Stone Steps, can be challenging, so assess your fitness level.
The natural monuments are primarily shaped by the karstic landscape of the Hyblaean Mountains. Rivers like the Anapo and Cassibile have carved deep gorges into the limestone over millennia. This process has created spectacular canyons, such as Cavagrande del Cassibile, and features like the 'Calcinara Quarry' formed by the Calcinara Stream. The presence of karstic caves, like the Grotta dei Pipistrelli, also highlights the water erosion on permeable rocks.
