At 1700 meters above sea level, the Pilar de Tolox is the highest spring in the entire province of Málaga. It is believed to have Roman origins, and for centuries it was a mandatory stopping point for shepherds and flocks. From this point begins the toughest section of the ascent to the Torrecilla peak, the highest peak in Málaga.

As of April 2026 , one can reach the recreational area Quejigales by car. The route is well marked and chill, compared to other routes marked as “Hard” on Komoot. The final ascent to the peak is well marked and very doable as is the descent. The views are very nice, from the Sierra Nevada to the Sierra de Grazalema, from Malaga to Gilbraltar. Overall a rewarding hike!

A chestnut tree that is hundreds of years old, its size leaves no doubt about it. It is incredible that there are no signs or indications. If you do not know where it is, it is essential to have a track and GPS that will take you to the point. It is difficult to see from the road (you must leave it and walk along a path for about 100m). It is certainly worth it, the tree is majestic, although depending on the time of year you visit it, it will be more or less leafy. It is advisable to observe it from different points, its trunk is not round and depending on the angle you will see it more or less thick and wide.

The River Genal, called a Natural Monument, is a short river in southern Spain, located in the Serranía de Ronda  , west of the province of Málaga. The river rises in Igualeja from a spring in a cave known as " El Nacimiento " and eventually flows into the Guadiaro River.

Tuula

Hiking in October: note that when you get near to posas (round ice storage made of tiles) there could be flying a LOT of quite big insects. NOT a great place to have snack or take a break. They land on you and your food. Take a good amount of water and protein/salty lunch with you as the trail could be as long as 20 km if there might be a locked gate by the parking lot and it's 3 km from there to trail head. Start the hike early in the morning that you get back in daylight. You can also choose to come down the road but it's about 5 km and very boring. Might catch a stunning sunset above misty mountains though. 👍 We had Salomon parh running shoes and they were excellent for this hike. We recommend also to use walking poles: they help you to get up and down safely in steepest parts of this trail. Worth the hike to go here. Stunning views from the summit.

The Castaño Santo is a huge and ancient specimen of the Castanea sativa species that is located in an area known as the Hoyo del Bote, in the Sierra Real de Istán, Spain. Located at 710 meters elevation. It is probably the oldest tree in the entire province of Malaga. Its age is estimated at around eight hundred and a thousand years old.
