October 5, 2024, Lake Stuart

The Enchantments Core Zone may be one of the most popular destinations in Washington state, but those who venture to Lake Stuart may receive the particularly enchanting reward of relative solitude in a highly trafficked area. Most hikers heading into the Enchantments use the Lake Stuart Trailhead, but make it into the Core Zone via Colchuck Lake and Aasgard Pass. However, taking the right trail 2.2 miles from the trailhead will lead you into an adjacent valley with a large, shallow lake at the base of the imposing massif of Mount Stuart.

This is one of the absolutely stunning lakes hidden in Alpines Lakes Wilderness. Better yet, if you have the stamina to continue around Perfection Lake to the north, you can follow the Snow Lakes Trail to a view of Perfection Falls as it drops down more than 20 feet, then slides down another tier into the lake.

October 10, 2023, Aasgard Pass

The highest point of the Enchantments Traverse, Aasgard Pass from Colchuck Lake is the most popular route to climb into the Enchantments Core. When it is snow free, the route is pretty straightforward and marked with user cairns. It climbs nearly 2,000 feet in a mile over scree and rock. When covered in snow, it is important to stay to the left to avoid the creeks that may not be visible. Poles and microspikes will be helpful, especially if you are going down this route. I would recommend doing additional research on this route before attempting it so that you have a solid understanding of what the climb entails.

September 7, 2023, Sahale Glacier

This glacier sits at nearly 7,400 feet and is one of the highest in the Park. From here, the mountaintops are incredible, with views of Doubtful Lake all the way up. There are many wildflowers in the spring and plenty of opportunities to take photos of the many mountain goats in the area. It is a great turnaround point or a place to enjoy some alpine camping (a backcountry permit is required). If you are looking for an extended hike, the trail continues to Sahale and Buckner Mountain; however, If you choose to continue, the path becomes very steep with all rock and lots of scrambling.

This is a particularly good spot for views of majestic McLellan Peak, on the far side of the water. These lakes used to be a popular place for people to basecamp within day-hiking distance of the Enchantments, if you didn't get a permit to camp within the Enchantments. But now you need an overnight permit here, too, if you plan to camp between May 15 and October 31. More information here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/okawen/specialplaces/?cid=fsbdev3_053607

Colchuck Lake is a stunningly beautiful destination in its own right, or as a gateway to Aasgard Pass and the Enchantments. It's worth walking south along the lakeshore; there are some dry campsites here that you can use if you have the appropriate permit.

November 14, 2022, Dishpan Gap

Dishpan Gap is a major trail junction with trails leading to all directions: Bald Eagle Trail and North Fork Skykomish Trail to the west, the Pacific Crest Trail to the south and north and Little Wenatchee Trail (a little further north) to the east. The latter will get you to Little Wenatchee Trailhead. Since this is located in an old burn area, make sure it is not closed. Not that obvious is the fact, that Dishpan Gap is an old cinder cone and has a nice flat area to pitch tents right in the middle.

Are there family-friendly natural monuments or activities in Chelan County?

Yes, Chelan County has options suitable for families. While some areas like The Enchantments are more challenging, places around Lake Chelan offer water-based activities like swimming and kayaking. Always check specific trail difficulties before heading out with children.

What is the best time of year to visit the natural monuments in Chelan County?

The best time to visit largely depends on the experience you seek. Summer (July-August) is ideal for hiking in higher elevations and enjoying water activities on Lake Chelan. Fall (late September-October) is spectacular, especially for viewing golden larches around alpine lakes like Lake Ann. Spring offers wildflowers and fewer crowds, while winter provides opportunities for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in accessible areas, though many high-elevation trails will be snow-covered.

Do I need permits to access certain natural monuments in Chelan County?

Yes, some areas, particularly within The Enchantments, require permits. For instance, overnight stays at places like Lake Stuart or Colchuck Lake in the Enchantments Permit Area necessitate reserving an overnight permit in advance. Day hikes generally do not require permits, but it's always wise to check the latest regulations with the US Forest Service before your visit, especially for popular or sensitive areas.

Chelan County is home to diverse wildlife. In alpine areas like The Enchantments, you might spot mountain goats. Keep an eye out for various bird species and smaller mammals throughout the region.

Is Lake Chelan itself considered a natural monument, and what makes it unique?

Yes, Lake Chelan is a significant natural monument. It's the third deepest lake in the United States, stretching about 50 miles. Its unique fjord-like shape and depth are the result of multiple cycles of glaciation over millions of years, carving out a deep, U-shaped glacial valley. The lake's crystal-clear waters and extensive shoreline make it a popular destination for recreation and offer stunning geological insights into the Chelan Complex migmatite outcrops.

What is the Stehekin Valley, and how can I access it?

The Stehekin Valley is a pristine wilderness area located at the remote northern end of Lake Chelan. Its isolation is a key part of its charm, as it's only accessible by boat (via the Lake Chelan ferry), float plane, or by hiking in. This makes it a true escape into untouched nature, offering a unique four-season experience amidst mountains and waterfalls like Rainbow Falls. It adjoins North Cascades National Park and is part of the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.

Are there any unique plant species found in Chelan County's natural monuments?

Yes, the Lookout Natural Area, for instance, is home to the rare Chelan rockmat plant, which is found nowhere else in the world. This area protects fragile shrub-steppe habitat, which supports a variety of unique flora adapted to its specific conditions. Exploring these areas can offer glimpses of specialized plant life.

What are the parking and public transport options for accessing natural monuments in Chelan County?

Access largely depends on the specific monument. Many trailheads for popular areas like The Enchantments have designated parking lots, which can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Public transport options are generally limited for remote natural monuments, making personal vehicles the primary mode of access for most. For the Stehekin Valley, access is primarily by ferry or float plane from the town of Chelan. Always plan your parking in advance and check for any required passes or fees.
