September 29, 2025, Cyryl and Metody Historic Oaks, Hłomcza

The oak's circumference was measured in 2018 and is 6.95 m. The oak tree grows near the Greek Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (built in 1859). Its trunk is divided into three main branches, one of which is broken quite low. A significant portion of the bark is missing from the side of this branch, and the interior of the entire tree is likely rotten. The oak tree was designated a natural monument in 1980, along with another specimen growing in front of the church (with a circumference of 581 cm - according to the CRFOP database). The special character of the place is given by two centuries-old oaks, called Cyryl and Methodius by the locals, which according to dendrologists are 800 and 700 years old respectively. During World War II, when the German-Soviet border existed on the San, the Cyryl oak served the Germans as an observation tower. The Polanki nature reserve was established in 1996 to protect natural forest communities of the Carpathian beech forest. A nature and educational trail with a length of approximately 2 kilometers was created within the reserve. It is located 8 km from the center of Sanok, you can get there by car or public transport. There is tourist infrastructure on the path, including a shelter with a bonfire place and 10 thematic stops. The stops present various species of trees, birds, mushrooms, monumental firs, Carpathian beech forest and rare plant species. During the hike, it is worth paying attention to the 19th-century earthworks at stop No. 2, used for primitive oil extraction. The path can be visited all year round, but it is recommended in spring due to the flowering plants.

On the eastern side, in front of the entrance to Strachocina from the side of Kostarowiec, on the mound and plinth there is a figure of Christ the King of the Universe, erected in connection with the Jubilee Year of Christianity celebrated in the Church. The figure was made by Szeffner's company. It was consecrated by Fr. Bishop Adam Dyczkowski, ordinary from Zielona Góra, September 14, 2000. During the work on making the mound, a spring gushed out at the foot of the mound. They are covered with stones and you can get refreshing water there.
