Fantastic views of the fjord! The trail markers are clearly visible. However, you'll have to cross several small streams without any assistance, which could be problematic in rainy weather.

Nice side road over the Öxipass with much less traffic than on the Ringstrasse. Quite steep in places on the south side.

Very impressive highland track through the middle of Iceland. Desert and desert-like area. You have to ford rivers several times. You should bring food for the whole route, as you can only buy a few snacks in the huts along the way. In 2016, one of the huts was closed all summer - you have to be well organized or camp wild. The track has many, sometimes steep, inclines. Next time I would definitely go on a mountain bike, not a touring bike. Our sugar cubes were completely crushed by the shaking 😁

A basic supply of food should be carried with you. Not much happens on the way.

Iceland offers numerous scenic mountain passes. For breathtaking views, consider the drive over Öxi Pass in East Iceland, known for its dramatic scenery and numerous waterfalls. The Waterfall at Öxi Pass is a particular highlight. Another stunning area is Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker, famous for its iconic 'Rainbow Mountains' with vibrant rhyolite geology.
Námaskarð Pass in Northern Iceland is a highly active geothermal area, characterized by smoldering fumaroles, steaming hot springs, and boiling mud pots, creating an otherworldly, colorful landscape. The Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker area is also renowned for its unique rhyolite geology, resulting in mountains displaying a stunning array of colors.
Yes, several spots offer family-friendly access and views. The Highest Point of Þingvallavegur and the View of Þingvellir Church and Mountains from the Small Platform are both categorized as family-friendly viewpoints, offering beautiful panoramic views of Thingvellir National Park.
Most of Iceland's mountain passes, especially the highland routes known as F-roads, are only accessible during the summer months. They typically open in early June and close in late September or early October, depending on weather conditions. It's crucial to check road conditions with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration before traveling.
The terrain varies significantly. Some passes, like Öxi Pass, feature gravel roads with steep sections. Highland routes such as Sprengisandur Pass and Kjölur Route (F35) are F-roads, characterized by bumpy, desolate, and expansive landscapes, often requiring a 4x4 vehicle. Hiking trails, like those in Landmannalaugar, can range from marked circular routes to more challenging, unmarked paths.
Near Iceland's mountain passes, you can find a variety of outdoor activities. For hiking, explore trails like the 'Öxarárfoss – Flosagjá Fissure loop' or 'The first hot springs – Reykjadalur Hot Spring River loop'. If you enjoy cycling, routes such as 'View of Grótta Lighthouse – Sun Voyager (Sólfar) Sculpture loop' are available. You can find more details on these activities in the Hiking in Iceland and Cycling in Iceland guides.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, the View of Gunnlaugsskarð offers a route to the summit that is not marked and considered challenging. The Sprengisandur Pass, an F-road crossing the vast Central Highlands, also provides an unparalleled experience of Iceland's raw, untamed interior, ideal for adventurers prepared for remote highland travel.
Visitors are consistently awestruck by the unique landscapes. Many describe Landmannalaugar as surpassing expectations with its 'kaleidoscopic play of yellow, red and greenish-gray'. The feeling of vastness and isolation on routes like Sprengisandur is often highlighted as a unique journey. The dramatic scenery and abundance of waterfalls on Öxi Pass also receive high praise.
No, not for all, but many of the more remote and highland mountain passes, particularly those designated as F-roads (like Sprengisandur Pass and Kjölur Route), require a 4x4 vehicle. Some passes, like Námaskarð, are easily accessible on the main Ring Road. Always check road conditions and vehicle requirements before embarking on your journey.
Yes, the View of the fjord from Böggvistaðafjall is specifically noted for offering fantastic, expansive fjord views. The drive over Öxi Pass also provides breathtaking vistas over the fjord as you ascend.
The Landmannalaugar area, including the route to Hrafntinnusker, is a hiker's paradise. There are well-marked circular routes, such as one through the Grænagil Gorge and past the Brennisteinsalda volcano. More challenging hikes are also available. It's recommended to take a highland bus to reach Landmannalaugar safely, as weather conditions can make driving difficult. Always follow marked trails and respect the natural environment.
