August 12, 2026, Point 660 – Greenland Ice Sheet Access

Point 660 is one of the most unique and accessible places in the world to set foot on the immense Greenland ice sheet. This special location is at the end of a forty-kilometer gravel road from Kangerlussuaq, which winds through a desolate tundra landscape along the impressive Russell Glacier. Along the way, there is also a high chance of spotting Arctic animals such as musk oxen and reindeer in the wild. The special thing about Point 660 is that you don't need professional climbing equipment to step onto the eternal ice. From the end of the road, you walk via a steep gravel and rock path straight into the iron-strong glacier world. Although the terrain appears accessible, sturdy hiking boots and crampons are strongly recommended to move safely over the slippery, uneven ice. The location is situated in a rugged and remote Arctic wilderness area and is usually visited with special four-wheel-drive vehicles or via organized excursions from Kangerlussuaq. The landscape and the accessibility of the road are constantly changing under the influence of weather and meltwater, making a trip to the ice sheet a dynamic and impressive experience.

The Icefjord near Ilulissat is world-famous and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. This makes the Icefjord a very special place, one you will never forget. The magnificent Sermeq Kujalleq glacier is a truly impressive glacier. It is the fastest glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, moving 40 meters a day. There were other glaciers that moved faster, such as Qeqertarsuaq, but this changed after a while. The Sermeq Kujalleq, however, keeps moving. The ice glacier is truly enormous: it is 6 kilometers wide and 45 kilometers long. That's equivalent to about 66,000 football fields. Furthermore, the glacier is known for shedding the same amount of ice into the water as Manhattan consumes in a year. In fact, the Sermeq Kujalleq produces a full 10 percent of all Greenland's icebergs! A boat trip to the mouth of the Icefjord is an extraordinary experience. Gigantic icebergs have settled here on the bottom of the fjord mouth. At this point, the water is not as deep as further out in the fjord because the icebergs have pushed together sandbanks. Thus, the ice lies on the bottom here and only moves further when it melts and no longer touches down, or a larger chunk of ice breaks off from the glacier and pushes more ice outward. Or high waves suddenly arise from broken ice, which then lift the ice and drive it further. A magnificent spectacle and an absolute highlight of a special kind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the most popular natural monuments to visit in Greenland?

Visitors frequently highlight the View of Ilulissat Icefjord for its spectacular vistas of massive icebergs. Another highly regarded experience is visiting the Greenland Ice Sheet, with access points like Point 660 – Greenland Ice Sheet Access, offering a unique opportunity to hike across the vast ice cap.

Are there family-friendly natural attractions in Greenland?

Yes, several natural monuments offer experiences suitable for families. The Stone Cairn on the Boardwalk by Ilulissat Icefjord is categorized as family-friendly, providing accessible views of the icefjord. Additionally, walking trails along the Ilulissat Icefjord are generally accessible, and Disko Island offers diverse landscapes with hiking trails and hot springs that can be enjoyed by families.

What unique geological features can I explore in Greenland?

Greenland boasts a variety of unique geological features. You can witness the colossal icebergs of the Ilulissat Icefjord, explore the volcanic origins of Disko Island with its basalt mountains and black sand beaches, or marvel at the ancient geological formations and rocks found around Prince Christian Sound. The Uunartoq Hot Springs also offer a rare chance to bathe in naturally heated pools, warmed by underground Earth movements rather than volcanic activity.

What is the best time of year to visit Greenland's natural monuments?

The best time largely depends on your desired experience. Summer (June-August) offers the midnight sun, milder temperatures, and easier access to many sites, ideal for hiking and boat tours. This is when the Ilulissat Icefjord is particularly stunning with the sun reflecting off icebergs. For witnessing the Northern Lights, the darker, colder months from September to April provide optimal viewing conditions, especially along the untouched east coast.

What outdoor activities can I do near these natural monuments?

Greenland offers a range of outdoor activities. Near the natural monuments, you can find numerous hiking opportunities, such as the Blue and Red Trails, Ilulissat Icefjord, or the Blue Icefjord Route. For more extensive adventures, you can explore routes like those found in the Hiking in Greenland guide, which includes trails near Ilulissat and Nuuk. Mountaineering and rock climbing are popular in areas like Tasermiut Fjord, while kayaking is also a fantastic way to experience the fjords.

Are there any less crowded or hidden natural gems in Greenland?

While many natural monuments are well-known, exploring areas like Scoresby Sound on the east coast offers a truly remote and immersive Arctic experience with dramatic scenery and abundant wildlife. Tasermiut Fjord in southwestern Greenland, with its towering mountains and vertical rock faces, is a paradise for trekkers and kayakers seeking solitude away from more frequented spots.

What kind of wildlife can I spot at Greenlandic natural monuments?

Greenland's natural monuments are rich in Arctic wildlife. In areas like Scoresby Sound and Disko Island, you might spot whales, seals, and various seabirds. The vastness of the Greenland Ice Sheet and its surrounding fjords also support diverse ecosystems, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly during boat excursions.

What should I wear when exploring natural monuments in Greenland, especially in winter?

Given Greenland's Arctic climate, layering is essential. In winter, prepare for extreme cold with insulated, waterproof outer layers, thermal base layers, warm hats, gloves, and sturdy, waterproof boots. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool, so bring warm layers, a windproof and waterproof jacket, and comfortable hiking shoes. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen due to the strong reflection off ice and snow.

How difficult are the hiking trails near Greenland's natural monuments?

Hiking difficulties vary significantly. Trails around the Ilulissat Icefjord, such as the Blue and Red Trails, range from intermediate to challenging. Accessing the Greenland Ice Sheet, for instance at Point 660, can involve challenging terrain. However, there are also easier options, as highlighted in the Easy hikes in Greenland guide, which includes routes like the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre loop from Ilulissat.

Can I witness glacier calving in Greenland?

Yes, Greenland offers excellent opportunities to witness glacier calving, a dramatic natural phenomenon where large chunks of ice break off into the water. The Eqip Sermia Glacier, located off the western shores, is particularly renowned for reliable calving events, providing a powerful display of nature's force. Excursions from towns like Ilulissat often visit this glacier.

What is special about the Prince Christian Sound?

Prince Christian Sound is a narrow fjord passage at Greenland's southernmost tip, celebrated for its incredibly dramatic scenery. Cruising through it offers unforgettable views of towering mountains, active glaciers, steep cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. The geological formations in this area are among the oldest in the world, adding to its unique appeal.

Where can I experience the Greenland Ice Sheet up close?

You can experience the Greenland Ice Sheet up close at locations like Point 660 – Greenland Ice Sheet Access. This offers a unique opportunity to visit and even hike over the ice cap, providing a profound sense of untouched wilderness and a perspective on the immense scale of Arctic nature. Guided tours are recommended for safety and a richer experience.
