At the northern end of the Wolfzahnau, the Wertach River flows into the Lech River. The Lech and Wertach rivers converge in the Wolfzahnau – a landscape conservation area within the city of Augsburg, located on the western bank of the Lech River. The Lech carries greenish water, while the Wertach carries brownish water.

The Lech is a right tributary of the Danube. The 256 km long river originates in Vorarlberg in the Hochtannberg region at the confluence of the Spullerbach and Formarinbach streams in the Tannläger valley. It flows through Tyrol and southern Bavaria, where it empties into the Danube. Shortly before the Austrian-German border, it joins the Vils river, forms the artificial Lechfall near Füssen, and crosses Swabia and Upper Bavaria on its way. The Augustus Fountain in Augsburg is an impressive Renaissance work of art and one of the city's three magnificent fountains. It is located on the Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) directly in front of the Augsburg City Hall and is dedicated to Emperor Augustus, the legendary founder of the city (Augusta Vindelicum). The fountain was created between 1588 and 1594 by the Dutch sculptor Hubert Gerhard and is an important example of Renaissance art in southern Germany. In the center of the fountain stands the bronze statue of Emperor Augustus, who is depicted in Roman armor and symbolically represents the founding and protection of the city of Augsburg. The figure rises on a stone pedestal and is surrounded by four allegorical female figures representing the rivers Lech, Wertach, Singold and Brunnenbach. These rivers were vital for the development of Augsburg and played a central role in the city's water supply and industrial history. The Augustus Fountain thus symbolizes the connection between history and water management, which continues to shape Augsburg to this day and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 as the "Augsburg Water Management System." The fountain is a popular photo motif and a central meeting point in the heart of the city, where the history of Augsburg remains alive.

The Dutchman Hubert Gerhard had been working on the models for the figures in the Augustus Fountain since 1588: the bronze figures were cast in 1590/91. The fountain in front of the town hall was inaugurated in 1594. The larger-than-life bronze figure of the city's founder, Augustus, stands on its pillar. The pillar is decorated with herms modeled on Italian fountains, with water spurting out of their breasts as well as the mouths of the dolphins held by putti. The Augustus Fountain becomes a monument to the imperial city's water management through the embodiment of four bodies of water on the edge of the basin and their attributes. Two male figures represent the wild mountain rivers Lech (spruce wreath and raft oar) and Wertach (oak leaf wreath and fishing net). Two female figures represent the mill river Singold (wreath of wheat and a mill wheel quarter) and the Brunnenbach that provides drinking water (crown and drinking water jug).
