European Monument at the Three-Country Point

Highlight • Monument

Here you can visit three countries on a short tour. The borders of Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany meet at the border triangle in the Ourtal. There is also the European monument here. Despite the touristic interesting location, it is mostly quiet and idyllic here. The Our flows peacefully through the green valley. A really nice area.

Kneiff is a hill in the Ardennes, in the commune of Troisvierges, in northern Luxembourg, near the tripoint shared with Belgium and Germany. At 560 metres, it is the highest point in the country; it is 1 m taller than Buurgplaatz, which is often erroneously considered Luxembourg's highest point. It lies close to the town of Wilwerdange.

TRIP NOTES.
Kneif 560m, Luxembourg, UN Country High Point.
I walked this along with Signal de Botrange 694m (Belgium) and Vaalserberg 321m (Netherlands) so that I could say I did the Benelux three peaks in one day.

3.7km, 45min, ascent 62m.
An unremarkable hike to take in Luxembourg’s country HP. We took in the white spot marker for Kneiff’s summit top along with the Buergplaz tower (disputed top). You can drive to both tops but we walked. Still nice scenery and plenty of parking at the start point.

View of the Our Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Our forms the border between Belgium and Germany, but also between Luxembourg and Germany - a look at the map will tell you how. Here you are in a corner of Belgium that is framed by two national borders. Just a little further south you will find the tri-border point between the countries mentioned. A fantastic area for mountain biking with lots of untouched nature, few people and great views.

Bat Tunnel near Huldange

Highlight • Cave

Permanently blocked. You can only get to the gate but it's probably better for the bats that way...

From the big track gravel, other side very nice path to vennbahn. Second way is recommended.

The Vennbahn border tunnel between Belgium and Luxembourg is closed to protect the winter quarters of rare bat species. The path to the tunnel is beautifully designed with bat information boards. The detour of about a kilometer there (and back) on the Belgian side to the gate at the tunnel entrance is worth it. Shortly before the tunnel entrance it suddenly becomes quite cold.

We can't really recommend it. You drive about 1 km off the main path and then end up in front of a gate in front of the tunnel, which is closed. You can save yourself the detour.

Accessible from one side with a racing bike. The other side is off-road (doable, but risk of puncture)

Terrific climate in summer at over 30 °. On the way there in the cool, cooling down is guaranteed. A dream. You have to experience it.

The tunnel is closed, but this natural experience is worth seeing. The drive through is worth it.

What a great way. A detour is worth it, even if you can't get through the tunnel.
