Schwarza Waterfall (Schwarza Valley)

Highlight (Segment) • Waterfall

This cycle path is one of the most beautiful in all of Thuringia and I'm not just saying that because it's my home. The path is only hard-packed gravel and therefore unsuitable for racing bikes, but with a trekking bike it is great to ride in both directions. Because the road is on the other side of the Schwarza and is screened off by trees and bushes, it is also relatively quiet. The winding valley is really varied and pleasantly cool in midsummer. I can really recommend the part to everyone.

Schwarza Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Schwarza River rises near Scheibe-Alsbach at an elevation of 717 meters above sea level. The water rises from a great depth at a fracture between red sandstone and slate, reaching the surface at a constant temperature of 6 degrees Celsius. It was enclosed in 1855. There are plenty of idyllic seating areas next to the spring. In winter, the water even feels warm when outside temperatures drop below 0 degrees Celsius.

Kalte Küche (Cold Kitchen) 696 m above sea level

At this point, the Rennsteig trail crosses the old military and trade route from Nuremberg to Leipzig.

Local legend tells us that the unusual name originated from the fact that carters would take a break here after the strenuous climb, eating bread and sausage, thus having a "cold kitchen" meal. In reality, however, the name more likely derives from "Kalde," meaning border, and "Kuchel" or "Kochel," the Franconian term for a small church. Therefore, "Kalte Küche" means something like border chapel. Historical records show that a small wayside chapel stood at the old pass.

The border between the Thuringian Forest Nature Park, the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale Nature Park, and the Franconian Forest Nature Park runs here.

The Meurasteine are a three-tiered wall on a rocky ridge and extend a little into the Schlagetal. The jagged rocky section is a good 500 million years old and consists of quartzite. You can do a little scrambling here, over steps hewn into the rock. A shelter also "floats" there.

Has the charm of a war memorial, only with eternal water instead of an eternal flame.
