The best MTB trails around Génave

We are facing a dam with a capacity of 530.5 hm3 intended mainly for irrigation, although due to disagreements between administrations, it seems that the finalization of channeling works is still in progress.

The traveler's view. After so many kilometers searching for alternative paths, pushing the bike among stones, turning back again and again, and enduring a thirst that seemed never-ending, this cycle path gifted us something as simple as it was valuable: the tranquility of pedaling. The last kilometers passed with a different kind of calm, perhaps because we knew the adventure was coming to an end. Looking back, we understood that the best routes are not always the ones that go as planned, but those that, despite all setbacks, leave behind memories that will last forever.

This cycle path was built by the Junta de Andalucía to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists on the A-310 road, a heavily used route to access the heart of the Sierra de Segura. The project involved an investment of nearly 616,000 euros and created a route of approximately 5 kilometers, also linking to the Vía Verde del Renacimiento, making it easier to cycle around the region more safely.

After a day full of unforeseen events, the cycle path connecting La Puerta de Segura with Puente de Génave was a real relief. Separated from traffic and surrounded by the landscape of the Guadalimar valley, it allows you to calmly cover the last kilometers of the route, enjoying the surroundings and gradually forgetting the accumulated fatigue. Sometimes, the best end to a great adventure is simply to pedal without haste.

The traveler's view I perfectly remember that moment. I had already covered many kilometers without a single drop of water in my bottle and, yet, in front of us stretched an immense sheet of crystalline water. It was one of those paradoxes that only those who travel by bicycle understand: being surrounded by water and at the same time feeling the thirst becoming more intense. Even so, contemplating the reservoir compensated for some of the fatigue and reminded us that, even on the most complicated days, there is always a landscape capable of bringing back a smile.

Did you know...? Although the dam was completed in 2015, it was the subject of debate for years because the infrastructure needed to fully utilize the stored water took time to develop. In the meantime, the reservoir became a new landscape for the region and an attraction for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.

Pay attention to... Unlike other reservoirs located in large open valleys, Siles adapts perfectly to the mountainous terrain of the Sierra de Segura. Its winding shores, surrounded by pine forests, make it look like a natural lake rather than a large engineering work at many points.

The Siles reservoir collects the waters of the Guadalimar River, one of the main tributaries of the Guadalquivir. Its construction began in 2007 and ended in 2015, with the aim of regulating the river's flow, reducing the risk of floods, and ensuring resources for the supply and irrigation of the region. The dam, 52 meters high and 271 meters long, can store 30.5 cubic hectometers of water and is one of the most modern hydraulic infrastructures in the province of Jaén.
