This statue in honour of John Adrian Louis Hope was erected in 1911. However, it was located in front of the Burgh Halls until 1970. John Adrian Louis Hope lived from 1860 to 1908 and was the 7th Earl of Hopetoun as well as the first Governor-General of Australia and thus of the Commonwealth. In July 1900, he was appointed Governor-General of Australia, but resigned again in 1902 due to disagreements regarding his salary and left Australia. He was shortly thereafter, on 23 October 1902, created Marquess of Linlithgow.
