Awosting Falls is always gorgeous, regardless of season and recent rainfall. It is an easy walk from the parking lot with other little falls and pools on the way up, making it a great trail for small kids. You can see the falls from both the top and bottom via a short trail.

September 13, 2024, Walkway Over the Hudson

The Walkway Over the Hudson, also known as the Poughkeepsie Bridge, is a steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland. Originally it was built as a railroad bridge in 1889, then closed in 1974 due to fire damage and later reopened as a pedestrian walkway in 2009. It connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail with the Dutchess Rail Trail and is part of the Empire State Trail. Stretching 6,768 feet, it was the world’s longest pedestrian footbridge until 2016. The bridge is free to access and welcomes cyclists as well as foot traffic.

Mohonk Lake in the USA holds a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when the Mohonk Mountain House was built along its shores. Carved by glacial activity during the last Ice Age, the lake lies within the Shawangunk Mountains, offering a picturesque setting for a cycle break.

This is the part of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail which passes through New Paltz. The whole trail is approximately 22 miles in length and was the former Wallkill Valley Railroad. The railroad was closed in 1977 and the first section of trail opened in 1993. This is a multi-user trail, so please respect other trail users.

How many no-traffic gravel bike trails are available in the Black Creek State Forest area?

Our guide features 5 carefully selected routes in the broader Black Creek State Forest region that offer a no-traffic gravel biking experience. These range from easy to difficult, ensuring options for various skill levels.

What kind of terrain can I expect on gravel bike trails in Black Creek State Forest?

The Black Creek State Forests (both in Ulster and Herkimer Counties) are known for their rustic, unmaintained character. You can expect to ride on unpaved roads, old logging paths, and potentially 'herd paths' rather than groomed trails. This means varied surfaces, from packed gravel to looser dirt and natural forest floor, offering a true off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Are there any family-friendly no-traffic gravel routes in the area?

Yes, for families or those seeking an easier ride, consider the Springtown Truss Bridge – Nice old railway bridge with a view loop from Tillson. This route is rated as easy and offers a shorter distance, making it suitable for a relaxed outing.

Where can I find scenic views or natural features along these routes?

While the State Forests themselves are primitive, the broader region offers beautiful sights. The Ulster County area, for instance, is near the Hudson River, with views from points like Pitch Pine Overlook. The Nice old railway bridge with a view – Springtown Truss Bridge loop from Town of Rosendale specifically highlights a scenic railway bridge. The Herkimer County forest features hilly, scenic views, streams, swamps, and ponds.

Are there any longer, more challenging no-traffic gravel bike routes?

Absolutely. For a significant challenge, the Walkway Over the Hudson – Hudson Valley Rail Trail loop from Poughkeepsie is a difficult, nearly 100 km route with substantial elevation gain. Another demanding option is the Mohonk Lake – Bonticou Crag Summit loop from Town of New Paltz, which also features challenging climbs.

What is the best time of year to go gravel biking in Black Creek State Forest?

Spring and fall are generally ideal for gravel biking in this region. The cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage (in autumn) or blooming nature (in spring) enhance the experience. Summers can be warm and humid, and while winter offers unique beauty, unmaintained paths may be impassable due to snow or ice.

Are there any loop routes available for gravel biking?

Yes, several routes in our selection are loops. For example, the Walkway Over the Hudson – Hudson Valley Rail Trail loop from Poughkeepsie and the Duck Pond – Duck Pond loop from Town of New Paltz both offer circular journeys, allowing you to start and end at the same point.

What do other gravel bikers enjoy most about the Black Creek State Forest area?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the quiet, natural setting and the opportunity for adventurous, off-the-beaten-path riding away from vehicle traffic. The diverse terrain and scenic elements like the Hudson River views or the Springtown Truss Bridge are also frequently highlighted.

Is parking available near the starting points of these no-traffic gravel routes?

Parking availability varies by route. For routes like those starting near Poughkeepsie or New Paltz, you'll typically find public parking options in or near the towns. For the more primitive Black Creek State Forest areas, parking might be limited to roadside pull-offs or designated small lots. Always check specific trailhead information before you go.

Are dogs allowed on the gravel bike trails in Black Creek State Forest?

Both Black Creek State Forests generally permit dogs, but they must be kept on a leash. Given the unmaintained nature of many paths and the presence of wildlife, keeping your dog under control is essential for their safety and the preservation of the natural environment.

What should I bring for a gravel bike ride in Black Creek State Forest?

Given the rustic nature of the trails, it's advisable to bring a well-maintained gravel bike with appropriate tires, a repair kit, plenty of water, snacks, and navigation tools (like a loaded komoot tour). Cell service can be spotty, so offline maps are recommended. Always wear a helmet and consider carrying a first-aid kit.

Are there any specific regulations for cycling in Black Creek State Forest?

While mountain biking (which includes gravel biking) is generally permitted, it's important to remember that these are primitive state forests. There are no designated cycling-specific trails. Respect all posted signs, stay on established paths or unpaved roads, and be mindful of other users like hikers, hunters, or equestrians. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas with specific regulations.
