The Walkway Over the Hudson, also known as the Poughkeepsie Bridge, is a steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland. Originally it was built as a railroad bridge in 1889, then closed in 1974 due to fire damage and later reopened as a pedestrian walkway in 2009. It connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail with the Dutchess Rail Trail and is part of the Empire State Trail. Stretching 6,768 feet, it was the world’s longest pedestrian footbridge until 2016. Our guide features 5 carefully selected routes in the broader Black Creek State Forest region that offer a no-traffic gravel biking experience. These range from easy to difficult, ensuring options for various skill levels.
The Black Creek State Forests (both in Ulster and Herkimer Counties) are known for their rustic, unmaintained character. You can expect to ride on unpaved roads, old logging paths, and potentially 'herd paths' rather than groomed trails. This means varied surfaces, from packed gravel to looser dirt and natural forest floor, offering a true off-the-beaten-path adventure.
Yes, for families or those seeking an easier ride, consider the Springtown Truss Bridge – Nice old railway bridge with a view loop from Tillson. This route is rated as easy and offers a shorter distance, making it suitable for a relaxed outing.
While the State Forests themselves are primitive, the broader region offers beautiful sights. The Ulster County area, for instance, is near the Hudson River, with views from points like Pitch Pine Overlook. The Nice old railway bridge with a view – Springtown Truss Bridge loop from Town of Rosendale specifically highlights a scenic railway bridge. The Herkimer County forest features hilly, scenic views, streams, swamps, and ponds.
Absolutely. For a significant challenge, the Walkway Over the Hudson – Hudson Valley Rail Trail loop from Poughkeepsie is a difficult, nearly 100 km route with substantial elevation gain. Another demanding option is the Mohonk Lake – Bonticou Crag Summit loop from Town of New Paltz, which also features challenging climbs.
Spring and fall are generally ideal for gravel biking in this region. The cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage (in autumn) or blooming nature (in spring) enhance the experience. Summers can be warm and humid, and while winter offers unique beauty, unmaintained paths may be impassable due to snow or ice.
Yes, several routes in our selection are loops. For example, the Walkway Over the Hudson – Hudson Valley Rail Trail loop from Poughkeepsie and the Duck Pond – Duck Pond loop from Town of New Paltz both offer circular journeys, allowing you to start and end at the same point.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the quiet, natural setting and the opportunity for adventurous, off-the-beaten-path riding away from vehicle traffic. The diverse terrain and scenic elements like the Hudson River views or the Springtown Truss Bridge are also frequently highlighted.
Parking availability varies by route. For routes like those starting near Poughkeepsie or New Paltz, you'll typically find public parking options in or near the towns. For the more primitive Black Creek State Forest areas, parking might be limited to roadside pull-offs or designated small lots. Always check specific trailhead information before you go.
Both Black Creek State Forests generally permit dogs, but they must be kept on a leash. Given the unmaintained nature of many paths and the presence of wildlife, keeping your dog under control is essential for their safety and the preservation of the natural environment.
Given the rustic nature of the trails, it's advisable to bring a well-maintained gravel bike with appropriate tires, a repair kit, plenty of water, snacks, and navigation tools (like a loaded komoot tour). Cell service can be spotty, so offline maps are recommended. Always wear a helmet and consider carrying a first-aid kit.
While mountain biking (which includes gravel biking) is generally permitted, it's important to remember that these are primitive state forests. There are no designated cycling-specific trails. Respect all posted signs, stay on established paths or unpaved roads, and be mindful of other users like hikers, hunters, or equestrians. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas with specific regulations.
