JR56
August 6, 2026, Nordhusen Church Ruins

The stately 17-meter-high transverse tower, built of rubble masonry, is reminiscent of a settlement that was important 800 years ago and became a ghost town as early as the Middle Ages. Further evidence of this is provided by a partially preserved hollow way and the remains of a watermill that burned down in 1843. The Nordhusen ruin is a widely visible sign of the former settlement of Nordhusen. It was first documented in 1218, but fell into disuse by the end of the 15th century as the focus of settlement shifted to Hundisburg. Only the Romanesque-built west transverse tower of the former village church has survived to this day. The ruin is one of the west transverse towers typical of the Magdeburger Börde. Its ground plan dimensions of 11.80 m by 5.20 m and its height of 17 m indicate that Nordhusen was once an important place. The Nordhusen ruin is a stop on the "Straße der Romanik" (Route of the Romanesque). The historically significant and touristically popular cultural route connects 88 buildings in 72 locations in Saxony-Anhalt and is integrated into the European network "Transromanica". https://www.haldensleben.de/Kultur-Tourismus/Tourismus/Sehensw%C3%BCrdigkeiten/

In 1882, a brick factory was founded in Hundisburg, which produced bricks until 1990. After its closure, a support association was founded in 1991, which transformed the former factory and the grounds into a technical monument. Today, the Technical Monument offers a unique insight into the history of brick production for Germany. In the former clay pit, a wetland biotope was created, and in the drying barn of the facility, a ceramics workshop that finds versatile appreciation from schools and artists. Many visitors are attracted by the annual Brickmakers' Festival, which takes place in May as part of the International Museum Day. Guided tours, rides on the narrow-gauge railway, and creative work with clay in the coarse ceramics workshop are not only well and gladly utilized on this day. Furthermore, the support association integrates the brick factory into the cultural scene in Hundisburg with its own regular concert events. The annual jazz concert as part of the SommerMusikAkademie at Hundisburg Castle has become an event of supra-regional importance. Scientific conferences and seminars make Hundisburg known throughout Germany. Admission: Adults: €3.00 Children (5 to 14 years): €1.50 https://www.haldensleben.de/Kultur-Tourismus/Tourismus/Sehensw%C3%BCrdigkeiten/

Highlight 2 of the 4 Million Years of Human History Cycle Route: Since we still have a long way to go, we turn left and cycle along the Beber River, initially only passing the rear of Hundisburg Castle. However, a visit to Hundisburg Castle is an absolute must at the end of the tour or on another date! More detailed information about the castle, the castle restaurant, the castle shop, accommodation options, and the adjacent House of the Forest (especially recommended for families with children) can be found on site or at www.schloss-hundisburg.de.

Highlight 4 of the 4 Million Years of Man cycle route: It's still too early for a rest at the very beginning of the tour, but the mill pond is definitely worth a stop.

At the end of the 40 km cycling route, or at any other time, the "4 Million Years of Human History" exhibit is an absolute must-see when visiting the region. Further information about the history is available on site.
