May 13, 2026, Heimatmuseum Herrnhut

We continue past historical buildings, in a residential building erected in 1764, the Tourist Information and the Local History Museum are located. We naturally don't miss the exhibition. We examine the exhibits on the origin of the settlers, the history of the place, and the community's coexistence. Although 1/3 of the town was destroyed in the fire of 1945, a selection of pen drawings serves as a reminder. We also encounter Jan Hus here, his reformist work led to the old Unity of Brethren, centuries later this resulted in the religious refugees who founded Herrnhut. In the following 3 rooms, there are a variety of pieces of furniture and paintings, the house was spared from the fire of 1945. Striking in the Green Room are the hair pictures, we also get a glimpse into the Baroque garden. These are followed by the Leaf and Biedermeier Rooms, the historical rooms house over 300 years of history of the Kölbing family, who lived here. The last resident was Margarete Wauer (née Kölbing), to whom it is owed that several rooms are preserved in their original state. We feel the past that surrounds us. We go back out to the Zinzendorfhaus, the origin dates back to the manor house of Count Zinzendorf. https://youtu.be/APY8BgHzpnU

Past the bakery, built in 1735, we reach Zinzendorfplatz. Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf once granted religious refugees permission to settle here. Here is also the Kirchensaal, the central church building, erected from 1756 as a baroque hall church. We step inside, the interior is completely white, with a Herrnhuter star in the center of the ceiling. The interior is kept rather simple, there is neither a pulpit nor an altar, it somehow seems infinite. The current building dates from after 1957, the original building was destroyed in a fire in 1945. A small exhibition brings us closer to the settlements of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024. The core consists of the four towns Bethlehem in Pennsylvania (USA), Christiansfeld in Denmark, Gracehill in Northern Ireland, and Herrnhut in Germany. Over 1 million people worldwide have joined the Brüdergemeine. https://youtu.be/APY8BgHzpnU

North of the village of Russen, a lovely rest area stands slightly off a field path; it appears to be quite new. The trees and bushes nearby will grow considerably in the coming years. There is also a beautiful view towards Kemnitz and as far as the Wacheberg hill.
