The former hunting lodge was used as a remand prison and later as a penitentiary from the 17th century onwards, and the building was heavily fortified. After the founding of the GDR in 1949, Hoheneck became one of the largest women's prisons. Among the inmates were political prisoners; at times, the prison was overcrowded with 1,600 women, and isolation and solitary confinement were commonplace. Often, simply applying to leave the country was enough to become a "Hoheneck inmate." They worked on piecework, producing pantyhose and bed linens under appalling conditions, which were sold to well-known companies in the West. In the women's monotonous, grueling daily lives, it was only small signs that offered hope for the outside world, for freedom and a future. https://chemnitz2025.de/purple-path/leunora-salihu-bogen/

The Saxon Way of St. James passes by St. Mary's Church, as indicated by the sign in front of the church complex. In August 2025, a sculpture entitled "The Pilgrim," created by the Pfullendorf sculptor Peter Klink, was erected directly in front of St. Mary's Church. Donations from pilgrims and parishioners made its creation possible. The parish named the slender figure Marie. The parish newsletter describes the life-size wrought-iron figure as follows: "The pilgrim with the chains on the stele symbolizes the former women's prison Hoheneck, but also the shackles of our lives that can fall away during a pilgrimage. Furthermore, the pilgrim alludes to the venerable St. Mary's Church, from which she steps out and sets off on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela." https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienkirche_(Stollberg)
