The town hall was built in the Renaissance style in 1565, but it burned down on May 14, 1636, along with many residential and commercial buildings, during the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). At that time, the buildings were still thatched with straw, so fires could develop very quickly. It was rebuilt in the same year on the same site. Instead of a thatched roof, it was covered with wooden shingles. In 1718, the shingles were replaced by a tile roof. The cellar vault and the central section are among the oldest parts of the building. Above the entrance door is the TOWN CREST, carved in stone. It contains a knight in armor with an open visor in a red shield, holding a sword in one hand and a banner in the other. Above it are the words: "Ibsigna oppidana Rastenbergensis insculpte MDCCXXXVII" which means: "Seal of the town of Rastenberg 1737" In this year, the town of Rastenberg received its coat of arms. In the central part of the front facade, the symbol of justice, Justitia, is also carved in stone. The blindfolded eyes mean: Justice without regard to person. The scales mean: Justice must be carefully weighed. The sword: The guilty will be punished. Above it are the words: "sum quique" – "To each his own" Inside, murals depicting Rastenberg's history can be admired. As part of the extensive renovation of the town hall in 2002, the paintings were recreated by Klaus Ritter, the long-time head of the painting department at the German National Theatre Weimar, based on the originals by Kötscher.
