Appleby church dates from the early 14th century, although it is likely that there was a church on the site as early as Saxon times. Inside is the grave of Sir Edmund de Appleby and his wife Lady Joan, who lived at Moat House around the time the church was built. Sir Edmund fought with King Edward III at the Battle of Crecy. The interior was completely rebuilt in the first four decades of the 19th century and the church interior was given a very high ceiling with a plastered ribbed vault. At the same time, the north and south doors were locked and the main entrance was moved under the tower. The choir was also rebuilt in the 1870s. The oldest part of the church is the chapel in the northeast corner.
