Very nice circular path around the lake, this detour is worth it!

After a run on the Haukankierros, there are few better places to refuel than Cafe Haukka. As the only cafe within Nuuksio National Park, it enjoys a fine location and is connected to several trails.

From this parking lot you can follow various walking routes. We followed the yellow route of approximately 8 km. This route is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers and also not for people with walking difficulties. At various places in the park you can barbecue at designated places. Also bring your own drinks! A great recommendation to go walking or cycling here.

If you set off eastward from the hiking parking lot, you'll reach a small stream after just a few steps. It will accompany you for the next few meters—a beautiful start to your hike in Nuuksio National Park.

In Nuuskio national park, many path are clearly marked with coloured marks on trees. On this photo of a tree, there are marks of 3 routes (yellow, red and blue) which you can find correspondingly on the official map. Red marked route is 2.4 km Punarinnankierros, blue mark is 3,7 km Haukankierros and yellow mark is 7,2 km Korpinkierros. If you follow these marks, it is difficult to get lost even in worse weater conditions (fog or snow) https://julkaisut.metsa.fi/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/06/nuuksiofinsveeng.pdf

Two big parking places provide car parks for many cars at the end of the public accessible Haukalammentie. Information boards provide valuable information and maps of the area. Recycling bins for garbage, glass, metal help to secure a clean national park.

There are 17 easy trails perfect for younger children or those new to hiking, and 29 moderate trails for families seeking a bit more adventure.

Are there any stroller-friendly trails in Kauai?

While many trails in Kauai feature natural, uneven terrain, some sections of paths, especially around visitor centers or paved scenic overlooks, can be suitable for strollers. For dedicated stroller-friendly experiences, consider checking local park information for paved loops or boardwalks. Always verify the current trail conditions before heading out.

Can we bring our dog on the hiking trails in Kauai?

Policies regarding dogs on trails in Kauai vary by location and specific park regulations. Many state parks and protected natural areas have restrictions or require dogs to be on a leash. It's always best to check the specific rules for each trail or park you plan to visit beforehand to ensure a pleasant and compliant outing for your family and your furry friend.

What kind of natural scenery can we expect on family hikes in Kauai?

Kauai, known as 'the Garden Island,' offers incredibly diverse and lush scenery. On family hikes, you can expect to encounter tropical rainforests, cascading waterfalls, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking coastal views. Trails often wind through verdant valleys, past ancient trees, and offer glimpses of the island's unique flora and fauna.

Are there any circular routes suitable for families?

Yes, Kauai features several enjoyable circular routes that are great for families, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. A good example is the Raven's Loop Trail, which is an easy 7.5 km loop. Another option is the Haukankierros Trail, an easy 4 km loop in Nuuksio National Park, offering a delightful experience for all ages.

What is the best time of year to go hiking with family in Kauai?

Kauai enjoys a tropical climate year-round, but the best time for family hiking is generally during the drier months from April to October. During this period, trails are less muddy, and the weather is typically sunnier and less humid. However, even during the wetter season (November to March), you can find beautiful days for hiking, especially on the drier leeward side of the island.

Are there any trails that lead to waterfalls or offer great views?

Absolutely! Kauai is famous for its stunning waterfalls and panoramic vistas. Many family-friendly trails offer incredible views of the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, or lead to beautiful waterfalls like Opaekaa Falls. While specific trails vary in difficulty, you'll find numerous opportunities to witness these natural wonders. For example, the Iso-Holma Wilderness Loop offers scenic forest and lake views.

What should we wear and bring for a family hike in Kauai?

Given Kauai's tropical environment, it's advisable to wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for varied terrain. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and rain gear, as weather can change quickly. A hat and sunglasses are also recommended. For younger children, consider a carrier for longer distances.

Are there any hidden gem trails for families in Kauai?

Beyond the well-known spots, Kauai has many less-traveled paths that offer a unique family experience. Exploring areas within Koke'e State Park or lesser-known sections of Waimea Canyon can reveal tranquil forests and stunning viewpoints away from the crowds. These often provide a more intimate connection with the island's natural beauty. Always check local conditions and trail maps before venturing off the main paths.

Always plan to arrive early or consider carpooling when possible.

Can we spot any wildlife on family hikes in Kauai?

Yes, Kauai's diverse ecosystems are home to various wildlife. On family hikes, you might spot native forest birds, such as the 'Apapane or 'I'iwi, especially in the higher elevations.
