The settlement in the Baruth glacial valley is of Wendish origin and initially only consisted of the circular eastern part. In 1317 the place was first mentioned as "ville (village) Dummede (smoke)". Western settlement came later. The village initially belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg and from 1680 to the Electorate of Brandenburg.
