Franz Abt's father was the preacher Franz Gotthardt Abt (1752-1838), who worked in Eilenburg, and his mother his wife Maria Rosina Hanitzsch. He received his first music lessons from his father, who taught him how to play the piano. After graduating from the Thomas School, he studied theology and music in Leipzig. Contemporaries there included Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. After the death of his father in 1838, he devoted himself to music because it enabled him to earn his living. He led the student choral society and the Leipzig Philharmonic Society. During this time he made his first compositions, including opera potpourries and easy four-hand piano pieces for beginners and gave piano lessons. Source: https://www.wikiwand.com/de/Franz_Abt
