Anyone approaching Bad Harzburg from the Harz foreland after dark will see a brightly lit column towering high above the town's rooftops from a distance. This 19-meter-high stone obelisk on the Burgberg was erected in the 19th century and is one of the most striking landmarks of the spa town at the exit of the Radautal valley. The reason for erecting the granite column was a statement by the then Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, which spanned a conceptual bridge from the present of 1872 to the High Middle Ages. In that year, there were disagreements between the still young German Empire and the Vatican. The Holy See in Rome had rejected the German envoy Gustav Adolf zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, who doubted the infallibility of the Pope. This led to a heated dispute in the Reichstag in May 1872. Reich Chancellor Bismarck declared before the High House: "Rest assured, we will not go to Canossa - neither physically nor spiritually." Five years later, in August 1877, the "Canossa Column" was inaugurated on the Großer Burgberg near Bad Harzburg. With this obelisk on the site of the former Harzburg, the intention was, on the one hand, to commemorate Bismarck's statement before the Reichstag, which had since become a catchphrase. On the other hand, the granite column, visible from afar on historical ground, served as the aforementioned bridge 800 years back into German history. With no traffic and the fantastic scenery on both sides, this is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful climbs in the Harz Mountains. The asphalt is mostly smooth and more than manageable. The climb is rather uneven. While the first two kilometers in particular are almost flat, the following ones settle at 7-9%. You'll have to negotiate smaller climbs up to 14% (according to Wahoo). The last kilometer to Torfhaus is unfortunately on the main road, but it's a two-lane highway.
