Wartenfels Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The castle Wartenfels dates back to 1259. Since then she changed hands several times until she was conquered and burnt down in the peasant wars. Then the castle owners lived only sporadically on the makeshift restored castle. Since the end of the 16th century, the castle is uninhabited and decayed over time.

Restoration work did not take place until the 1980s. Today you can visit the ruins and take a look over the wall to the surrounding landscape.

Söllheim Palace and St. Anthony's Chapel

Highlight • Historical Site

Europe's pepper trade with India began with the discovery of the sea route by Vasco da Gama in 1498. The Suez Canal did not yet exist, the dangerous route ran around the southern tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. Often enough ships were lost, a huge loss of life, ship and valuable cargo of pepper and other exotic spices.
In 1680 Johann Anton Kaufmann, then a trading assistant in Salzburg, bought a ship that was long overdue. He prayed to St. Anthony - and lo and behold, the ship entered Venice. He was now a rich man, bought the Söllheim estate, expanded it into today's baroque palace and built a chapel next to it for St. Anthony. The pastor lived in the house next to the chapel, which is now the Pfefferschiff restaurant.

The highlight is not far from the Ischlerbahn route.

The castle's origins date back to a medieval fortress, first documented in 1323. Around 1565, it was converted into a court of law, but over time, its importance declined and it was already uninhabited by 1608. After the court's seat was relocated to St. Gilgen in 1703, the complex gradually fell into disrepair, and by 1811, large parts had been demolished or used as building material. In 1817, Field Marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede acquired the remains of the castle, and his son, Karl Theodor von Wrede, had a neo-Gothic palace built starting in 1843. Four octagonal towers, pointed arch windows, and a crenellated parapet were added, giving the current building its characteristic appearance. From 1880 onward, the castle changed hands several times, including Princess Franziska von Liechtenstein and later Demeter von Frank. Today, Hüttenstein Castle is owned by a private foundation and is not open to the public. The entire grounds, including the adjacent Krottensee lake, are used for private purposes. Visitors can only view the castle from the outside as part of cycling tours in the region.

Hellbrunn Palace is located on the southern outskirts of Salzburg – an extraordinary site with a rich history. Archbishop Markus Sittikus had the pleasure palace built around 1615, inspired by Italian architecture. Its famous features include the water features with their surprising effects and the artfully designed Mechanical Theater. Surrounding the palace is a sprawling park with tree-lined avenues, ponds, and the so-called Monatsschlössl (Monthly Palace).

To the south of the castle lies the equally impressive large Meierhof, whose structure dates back to the 15th century. The gate tower there was built under Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian.

Glanegg was first mentioned as an archiepiscopal seat in 1350 and was the seat of a district court for a very long time. This extended to towns on both sides of the Salzach. Under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, the complex, which was threatened with decay, was restored and given the current appearance of an inhabited tower castle.
