The Church of Our Lady on the Market Square is the oldest of Temse's seven churches. Protected as a monument since 1983, it features a mix of architectural styles and is the result of centuries of construction and renovation. The church's foundation is attributed to Saint Amelberga, patron saint of Temse, around 770. Statues of her can be seen both inside and outside the church. Inside, you'll find various art treasures and curiosities, such as beautiful 18th-century wood carvings and the mausoleum of Roeland Lefèvre from 1517. He was the first secular lord of Temse. Some also call the Church of Our Lady the Nijs Museum, after the renowned family of artists from Temse who designed much of the interior. Adrianus Nijs's wife served as the model for Saint Amelberga in the pulpit.

The sculpture group "The Tuysscher and the Vinegar-Sure" is also by Valeer Peirsman. The sculptures refer to the nicknames of the people of Temse. In the Middle Ages, residents of Temse were derisively called "tuysschers," meaning gamblers or gamblers for big money. Around the 18th century, the nickname "azijnzeker" (vinegar-sure) originated. The name comes from the many vinegar breweries active in Temse at the time. It also refers to the dialect word "zeker" or "zeiker," which means sourpuss.

Before World War II, ships were loaded and unloaded at Wilfordkaai by men known in Temse as "kaailopers." Between loading and unloading, they passed the time by simply doing nothing. The term was also used for men who spent a lot of time on the quay. Some have lived on in our memories as legendary folk figures. Three figures in this sculpture group are based on real people. The fourth symbolizes all quay walkers. Valeer Peirsman completed this bronze artwork in 1991.

On the corner of Markt and Wilfordkaai, directly across from the former flour mills, you'll find a small park with a bust commemorating Arthur Wilford. The Wilfords were an important family in Temse. Their ancestor, William Wilford, was a British immigrant who settled in Temse in 1828 as a flax merchant. He and his descendants established a sailcloth weaving mill and were the owners and managers of the Wilford boats, a permanent tourist boat service between Temse and Antwerp. Grandson Albert was mayor of Temse for a time, while his brother Arthur (1851-1926) pursued music. He was a composer and pianist and founded the first Dutch-language music school in Brussels in 1904.

At the entrance to the Church of Our Lady stands the statue of Father Poppe. Edward Poppe (1890-1924) was born in Temse, the son of a baker. He was ordained a priest in 1916. He served as assistant pastor of a parish in Ghent for two years, director of a monastery in Moerzeke for four years, and spiritual director in Leopoldsburg for two years. He wrote many prayer books for children, translated into more than 30 languages. Poppe was beatified in 1999. Valeer Peirsman designed this life-size statue for this occasion. The bas-relief depicts Poppe's life.
